My comment on that CR report is that I was disappointed that, when discussing the rear seat, there was some guy with a beard and sweater sitting in the back. I prefer Emily.

I wonder what the EPA figures will be for the Xdrive28i.

the previous X3 was a POS for a BMW. This model looks much better along with a interior that does not look cheap.

I wouldn't say POS but the ride was awful over rough roads. Hopefully they learned and the new version is better. It will be interesting to see a comprehensive head to head test with some of the newer competition like the XC60, Q5, MLK, EX35, and yes, even the SRX.

there is nothing about the E83 to me that qualifies as POS. The ride and the performance are just where I want them to be. Quality is fine. There is a connectedness to the road and driving experience that is absent with the ccompetition to my seat of the pants experiences. POS really doesnt describe the E83 in fairness. Especially the last few years of production. Cant comment on the earlier ones, tho.

Agreed. It's disrespectful and rude to come in here and say that the older X3 is a POS.

I had a 2005 X3 and loved it. I went to the dealer one day to buy an X5 and left with X3 after test driving both. The X3 felt like driving a 3-Series sedan, and the ride was perfect in my mind. The 2004 was supposed to ride harsh, but they fixed it in successive years and it was a dream to drive. It was a fun, functional vehicle that felt like a sports car compared to others in the SUV realm.

The styling of the new X3, though, makes me drool. That is one nice looking SUV, and with the turbo 3.5i engine it's going to be a screamer and a class leader.

Does that third one on your list only come in black?

I liked my 2004 X3 enough to buy a 2010.
I like the 2010 even better due to the practical upgrades in the refresh and going from the smaller engine to the larger engine was a huge improvement. I do see a smoother ride over concrete expansion joints, and the size is perfect for me.

This new re-design looks great, and in a few years Iíll probably get one. Iím disappointed that itís grown so much and is approaching the old X5 size, so my next one will either be the X1 or X3, Iíll make that choice then.

2011 x3

My wife and I attended our local dealership's unvailing of the new X3 and the styling looks like a nice improvement over the previous model. My wife currently owns a 2007 X3 that we picked up in Spartansburg. I hope the new 8 speed transmission is an improvement over the previous model shifter that always felt like it was hunting for the correct gear. The increased rear seat leg room is something the old model was definately lacking. I hope to drive one of the new models to check out all of these improvements.

I drove the new X3 just before Christmas, while I was shopping for the X5 I bought a couple of days later. I thought it was a great ride (but have never driven the first-gen X3). I would have bought this except for two things: it wasn't available for sale yet and I needed a new SUV now, and the center console is so wide relative to the rest of the space my knees felt forced together. I also wonder about its value proposition as it looked like it would be almost $50K with the same options I bought my X5 with. After figuring the incentives and discounts on the X5, the OTD on the two would have been alarmingly close.

But in the fun to drive department it was a blast.

Yup all 5000 of them in 2010 and 7000 in 2009. Not saying they are pos, just wrong tact to use to defend them.

I disagree with your approach. By 2009 the X3 had become long in the tooth. I don't know exactly how many they sold but I do think the talk of the "new X3" probably hurt a little. They had been rumored to come out with it later that year in 2009 ahead of schedule to compete with the new Mercedes GLK and other competitors.

In 2010 the rumors of the New X3 definitely hurt their sales. They gave up (didn't push) and expected that. I even believe they did not want us to start receiving the car in the US until January so all the sales could go toward the 2011 year (rather than start in October/Nov. and have the boost wasted in the clear loss this year for the US).

Overall worldwide the E83 was a very successful vehicle. They have produced more than 600,000 vehicles worldwide in just a little over 6 years. So... it is not unreasonable for the poster to jest "Probably why they sold so many of them."

Not unreasonable at all. There were also a plethora of really good alternative vehicles out there to provide competition. Something the early X3's didn't really have. Nine thousand vehicles is really not many at all when you consider Toyota probably sold that many Highlanders in CA alone.

The top of the line Highlander plus the Nav system is pretty much right at $40k MSRP. Do a hybrid and it goes even higher.

They are pretty well matched $$$-wise at the high end of options. Both are similar in size with just a few inches difference, the Highlander has a third row (for kids). The hybrid (as mentioned) is even higher in price. The Highlander is not a BMW, nor was it ever intended to be one, but it nevertheless is a solid and reliable car. If you move up into the RX Lexus hybrid territory, again, you will find an even higher cost -- the 450H competes with the entry X5, ML, FX, XC90 depending on equipment, with little discount (usually).
