2008 535xi Needs 1 Quart of Oil Which type?

I got this message today. I have 62k miles on the car right now. Can I just add this myself, or do I have to go to a shop. If I can do it myself, what type can I get and where do I get it?

Thanks!

Are you SURE the car REALLY needs a qt of oil????

Not enough info here in your post.

The oil level sensor can give false information depending on how the car is driven. If you take lots of short trips, the oil sensor may be giving false readings due to condensation build up in the oil. If so, putting an extra quart of oil in the car could cause engine damage due to cavitation. So.........

What are your driving habits??? If you tend to drive the car regularly for long periods (say 10 miles or more) and bring the engine up to full operating temp, then the oil sensor is probably reading accurately. How many miles since you last changed the oil??? 4K?? 10K??? 15K???? If it's only been a short while, your engine may be buirning oil at an unacceptable rate. If it's been 7.5K or longer, you may consider an oil change rather than dumping anpother qt in.

Give us a bit more info and we can give you some additional help.

Thanks for the reply. My day to day generally consists of short trips to work and back. Under 10 miles. I bought this car used and from the service records it looks like it was last in for oil service was at the 48k miles mark. So it would probably be a good idea just to get it in for a change?

Thanks again!

Dan

Yes, your oil has 14k on it. Rather than dump a quart of oil in it, go ahead and get it changed.

M1 0w-40 will work, too. So will Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w-40, but it's hard to find locally.

I guess you should first know what oil is in your car.

i never mix different oils
Not because it's good or bad (Which i don't know) but because i feels it's not right :P

Most TRUE fully synthetic oil will do fine on your BMW

Is M1 0w-40 available where you live? If so, use that.

Not knowing what oils are available where you live makes it hard to recommend something. Basically, you need an oil that meets BMW LL-01 spec.

Again, I would question the accuracy of the sensor. You should not be a liter low in 3000 miles. Not on a car with 180K, much less one with 90K. If it really is low, something is wrong. Either the car is burning oil (bad) or leaking it (bad, but not as bad).

If it was MY car, I'd drain it, measure the oil that came out and determine if it really was a liter low.

Yeah yeah yeah.....BMW will state that burning a quart in 4000 miles is normal but who really believes that line of BS????

Thanks for the replies guys! I used Mobile-1 5w-30 to top it off, before it was BMW Quality Longlife-04 SAE 5w-30. Is it a good Oil? Anyone else used the same oil?
