Oil Weight

Aloha, When living in San Diego, I used 20/50 oil per the suggestion of a mechanic. Now that I'm in Maui, should I change to a lower weight or stay with the same? My understanding is that the 20/50 weight is for real cold or real hot weather, and most days are in the 80's. I don't drive long distances, maybe 60 miles once or twice a week. Mahalo for your assistance, Laurel

20-50 is fine for where you are. It's adequate in the range of something like 10 degrees F to 120 degrees F.

Check the manual, there's a chart you can reference.

I guess what I really should of asked is... would it mess up my engine if I switched to a lower weight, as 20/50 costs more at oil change time. Also, changing the oil every 3,000 is a good thing... right? My sister has a Mercedes SUV and only changes every 7,000.

Couldn't actually HURT it unless you went too thin. But it may leak.

As for the 3,000 miles, you CAN go longer (they do in Europe even in old cars), but who knows how much that affects your engine wear? Newer cars often do have a much longer change interval because they are designed to use synthetic or even a blend.
