Lightbulb Titanium Parts Maybe

I would like your guy's opnion on this idea I Have. My dad and I are going to start making Titanium and aluminum motorcycle frames for race bikes. But I've convinced him to use my BMW for a prototype to make some parts for E36's.

Of course the first and easiest is going to be Strut Tower Braces, and possibly sway bars and then depending on dificulty control arms. Does anyone else have any ideas for parts and if the prices are fair is anyone interested in any of the items. Granted they will be limited number runs so I would have to know for sure theres a market out there first.

If prices are cheaper than others I'm down.

This would be a very, very tricky thing for you two if you planned on making a profit. there is a lot of competition for aftermarket parts for the e36, and the cost of titanium, I imagine, is quite expensive? I don't know how many people here would be willing to shell out big bucks for something like a titanium strut bar. Honestly, I'd love to have little titanium peices on my car, lighter, stronger, and it sounds pretty cool too , I just doubt I'd have the money.

Not to mention people are hesitant to buy ANYTHING without being able to read reviews, not many people want to be the guinea pig.. Anywho, now that I'm done being debbie downer, I'll say this: Good luck, and I'd love to hear how this turns out

I'm interested in front & rear strut tower braces if the price is low enough, but I highly doubt it will be with those kind of materials. I don't think anyone will be willing to pay a premium for a fancy strut tower brace, since they all do the same thing, except the expensive ones weigh a little bit less.

The prices shouldnt be to high, we will be buying tubing in bulk for the actual job of building frames. Also we have a supplier that sells "scrap" titanium very cheap. Looking at about $2.50 a inch. Hopefully with in a month we will be up and running. Ill be using my car as the guinea pig. I really don't want to make the parts as a full time thing, just something to do and a nice oppurtinity for bimmerfest members that have been here to help me out.

So really the final prices will pretty much be just the material cost and a little bit for labor. If you guys have any specific Strut Brace designs you like, let me know. I personally like this one

I hear you on the exhaust! We're going to try and make a titanium exhaust for the BMW Bike first. I would like to have a new titanium header to 2.5in pipe all the way back to a titanium twin canister. But like you said, my wallet wouldn't like it either lol. If I can get the materials cheap enough, I would like to do a limited run for just bimmerfest members at prob around $150-$200. I don't see me being able to do shift knobs or e-brake handles since we don't have a lathe. But you never know.

This is exactly the configuration I would want. If you can get these to us for the cost of materials and a little labor + shipping, sign me up!

I'd also want a strut tower brace for the rear as well.

K sweet, seems like we are on the same page lol. I had allready planned on the rear, it seems like too few companies make rear strut braces for our cars and the ones who do charge a arm and a leg. The biggest problem I see is the stupid little humps on the strut tower. I have a cheapo front brace and it ended up just bending the mount. This weekend Im going to head to my dads and discuss everything with him and look at material costs.

I'm with Karl, I'd definitely take a front and rear strut brace like this.

Update this page accordingly as you progress.

Strut bar for me too!

How about an undertray for the m3? The piece that shields the bottom of the engine from the bumper back

I wouldn't want a titanium undertray though. Aluminum would work just fine and be a lot cheaper.

My dad and I are working on some designs right now, and finishing up on buying all the equipment to get started. Its going to be slow at first since we both have full time jobs right now till everything gets running. I would say sometime around mid March we should have our first prototypes. Car stuff is kinda the secondary product, the main focus is on motorcycle parts so please be patient.

No rush, I was just curious if you had made any progress. It would be awesome if I could get the strut braces before my first track event of the season (April 28th), but I am in no way assuming that they will be ready by then. Stuff comes up, people are busy, plans change, etc. No worries.

Strut tower braces.....+1!
Sway bars................-1.....I think you and your dad can fabricate something that fits, but no offense, I don't think you guys have the engineering tools to do the complex engineering dynamics calculations to actually design it.
Control arms..........don't even think about it! If a strut tower brace breaks, worst you've got is refunding someone's money. If a control arm fails, someone can lose control of their car and have a serious accident. You and your father will get sued for everything you own.....and they'll win.
