IPod interface problem

Hi I'm new to the forum and hope that someone else has had the same problem as me and successfully resolved it. I have a 2003 Z4 with a BMW ipod interface installed in my radio (2005). It has worked fine until I changed the battery in the vehicle recently and found that the IPod mini that was connected to the system showed an 'un-happy face'. The device is caput. I have two other ipods (both Nanos) but when I connect them to the interface, the message "charging is not supported with this accessory" comes up on the face of the ipod. The music plays but does not indicate that the ipod is charging
I have contacted Apple and spoke with their tech support and they don't seem to have an answer saying it is possibly something involving the BMW interface in the car ...maybe needing a software update or so. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Newer iPods require an adapter to charge when connected to legacy iPod connections. The original iPod used diffent pins to charge than later iPods.

That's correct. Older Apple devices could be charged with either the USB 5 volts or the Apple Firewire 12 volts. Newer devices only accept the USB charging. If your legacy interface/charging system uses firewire, you need a converter.

Thanks so much...the responses that I have received have been very helpful. I now have hope for the connection. Has anyone used the CableJive stubz? I have read that it has better connectors than the Scosche device.
