BMW 530 vs.540i

Hello all, I am new to the site. I've been a fan of BMW for years. I have owned the entry level beemers 320 and 325, and am looking at pre owned 530 or 540is. Of the two, which one offers the best bang for the buck. I am not a speed merchant, so horse power won't be a deal breaker. I do prefer a more sporty exterior style.

More sporty exterior style? If you are already looking at them then you will notice they look the same except under the hood. Get either with a sport package.

ezye2001: What's a sport package?

It has:

Shadowline trim...it's black
17 inch wheels
sport springs
larger sway bars
sport seats (maybe)
3 spoke sport steering wheel (maybe)

So exterior looks won't be too different and you can either get one already mod'd or do it yourself to make it more sporty.
The main difference between the two (other than I6 and V8) is the handling and feel. One person put it (and coincidentally how mine got her name): the I6 (530) is like a jackrabbit, able to accelerate and turn; the V8 (540) is like an angry bear, plenty of power and straightaway speed but not as good cornering.

Make sure you consider 1) fuel consumption, 2) maintenance costs and associated funding, and 3) what you want. If you haven't driven both don't make a decision until you do.

If you can find a 2003 530 sport with a manual transmission, than that would be my pick.

If you're not worried about power, the 530i is fine. Like Jicafold said, get the sport package. Plus, the 6 cylinder seems to be a little easier on maintenance, from what I've heard.

The car is referred to as a "Bimmer."

Drive examples of both of them, then you will be able to make a good decision.

Or "headlights!"

530 is a fine running car. 540 has a bit more bottom end torque. Both are exceptional cars.

This comes up so often it should just be a ******** I6 vs V8

The 540i is the only E39 V8 and it has recirculating ball steering.
ALL other E39's (U.S.A. at least) are I6 with rack and pinion steering.

Drive both to see which steering feel you prefer. Of course, if you want the V8 you aren't going to buy a I6 and swap it, at least not to make it a 540 - that is the reason they used different steering setups. You'll have to research other swaps (think LSx) to see what works into a I6 or V8 car.

Ahh, so if you follow it with ":" it gets the "*******"

I take it that can't be defined strictly for thread titles? I'll have to remember never to follow it with a colon.

Easy ether You want a v8 or straight 6 (I6) engine

Of course the v8 will have more hp but will require much more maintenance then a I6.

If u plan on working on the car your self, I would go with 530 with sport package.

Depending on how you drive it yes. I am getting 16 in the burb commute and was ~26 on the return NY trip. Granted my weekend fun drives might be better expressed in gpm...
