What the heck is the dot to the right of my NAV display?

O.K., I admit that I am being lazy. I only took a very brief look at the manual and could not find anything. I have a small dot to the right of my NAV display, which is in my 2011 535xi. My friend, who has a 535xi M sport does not have this dot. My CA said it is an L.E.D. light, but it never lights up or seems to do anything. Does anyone know what this dot is and what it is for?

Where is it exactly? Do you mean to the right of the actual screen, on that part that is the filler panel before the dashboard? Or do you mean a dot on the screen itself? I don't think I've got any type of LED to the right of the screen.

The dot is not on the screen. Rather, it is on the black panel to the right of the screen, which you have described as the filler panel. It is there, but does not seem to do anything, and, as I said, it is not on my friend's vehicle. And, it is not on your vehicle either. I wonder what it could be?

Is his an X Drive also? Wonder if it's somehow related to AWD. Is it right in the middle of that filler piece? How big, about 1/8" or so? Sounds "interesting". Maybe we need a picture... Maybe another internal sensor of some type, detecting light levels or something.

EDIT -- Oh, you already said his is XDrive -- sorry.

Yes, my friend has an XDrive, but no dot. The dot is very small, probably about 1/8" at most. I have never seen this dot light up. It is just there, but it does not seem to do or mean anything.

I think your car was built later than mine, which was mid-August. How about your friend's? I'm starting to think maybe it's a light sensor for automatic adjustment of the light level of the Nav screen, whose overall brightness is controlled via iDrive and the instrument panel dimmer control. Try covering up the spot while you're driving during the day and see if you notice any change in the Nav screen brightness.

My vehicle is a week 37 production. My friend's vehicle was built later in the year than mine, he just picked it up and, as I said before, it has not dot.

I've been wondering that same thing. I've never noticed it on or blinking either. A google search mentioned something about the telephone. I've got a great CA, so i'll shoot him an email and see what he says. Mines a week 41 production car.

Couldn't copy the pic, but if you go to BMWusa.com and look at the interior gallery photos of the 5 you can see it. The caption is about the Night Vision w/ Pedestrian recognition

Here is a picture of the offending dot. Sorry about the quality of the picture. It is evening time here, it is dark, and I did my best to photograph the dot in the dark. The dot is actually smaller than I originally estimated earlier on in this thread.

Wow, that is small. Maybe like he said, part of an option you have that your friend doesn't. Do you have the pedestrian thing?

BTW, I really like DSB on the 5's. I had mentioned before that when I saw it, it didn't look as "vivid" or bright as on a 3, maybe because of the bigger body. Anyway, it looks great!

My car has the same "dot". Build date was Sept. 16th. I have no idea what it does?

The only options that I have, which my friend does not, are the top & side view cameras and the 4 zone HVAC. (He has the M Sport.) I do not believe that either of the two options that I have would require the offending dot. At least I know that I am not alone. There is at least one other F10 owner, who has posted on this thread, who also has the offending dot. I will admit that this thread may not address the most important topic regarding the F10, but at least is addresses what now seems to be a mystery, i.e., the mystery of the offending dot.

You guys made get out of my easy chair and walk out to the garage to see if I have one. My car is a week 37 build and I have it also.

I thought the Nav display changed from day to night with the headlights. If so, what exactly does the sensor do? I looked through the manuel and I didn't see anything unless it's written and not in the illlustrations. Not that I like to look at pictures, but I can't read a manuel too fast!

That would be my guess too based on lots of other electronics that have similar sensors... Cant be sure based on whats been posted here and the build weeks, but is it in conjunction with the combox?

Undoubtedly it is the ambient light sensor.

Is everyone posting on this thread sure they do NOT have the "dot"? I do, but had to look closely to see it. I had not noticed it before I read this thread.

I noticed the dot on the day I picked up my 535i xDrive GT. My CA did not seem to know what it was.
