What happened to my 325Ci?
A recent post regarding dealer mishaps rekindled my interest in something that happened to me over the summer while attampting to purchase a new BMW. I'd love to get some feedback from one of the dealers on the board as to what they think happened.
Flashback to June 2003, and BMW as offering cash on '03 coupes because the '04s were (coming?) in. If I rememeber right, it was $2500 on 325Ci's and $3000 on 330Ci's, which would effectively price these cars under invoice if taken right from MSRP. Now, I heard via the internet that many dealers were in fact selling for $500 - $1000 less than invoice, but when talking to a sales consultant at the local dealer, he assured me that this was not the case, but readily offered to sell me a 325Ci at invoice. Still, I thought this was still a pretty fair offer so I went along with it.
Now, at this point, I turn into pretty much your average pain in the arse customer, trying on every shape, size, option package, color combo, etc., all while making my (really very helpful) run all sorts of locates for me, etc. This is my first new car purchase and I want to be sure. But, the list slowly gets whittled down, and I select either of two 325Ci's (topaz/sand vs black/nat brown) that I would be happy with, give my man a priority list, and then give him my credit card number for a $1K deposit. He says he'll call the dealers he has to trade with the next day and we'll get it done, car should be here in 7-10 days. Kool and the Gang.
The important point I HAVE NOT mentioned during all this is that while putting together the price for these cars, my man forgets to include the charge for LEATHER on the 325Ci. So, in reality, he has been quoting me prices effectively $1500 UNDER invoice for the cars. I have to admit, that after adding up the price 5 cars into it, I notice this is the case, but don't say anything. I don't know if this makes me a bad person or not, but my man here only told me about how many years he's been selling BMWs for about 50 times, so I don't feel all that bad.
The next day rolls around, and my man calls me back and says, sorry, those cars are gone, nothing we can do about it, please come back in and we'll look for some new ones. So, I go back in, and voila! when pricing out the new ones, he now knows to add in the charge for leather. I try to call him on it without looking like an arse, and he just plays dumb, saying he doesn't know how the difference in price exists. I tell him I've got to think about things and trudge home unhappy.
However, while my man never GAVE me the locate sheets, I do remember hearing the name of the dealer he called a couple days previous to see if the car was there. So, I surf over to their web site, and sure enough, it lists a car with my exact specs (topaz/sand) in their inventory. I call them up, ask them if they've got it, yup, sitting on the lot, new?, sure is, brand new, 15 miles on it, ok, great then thanks.
At this point, I call my man back at the dealer and ask him to confirm for me, telling him I've looked on their website, here's the photo, can you check it out for me. He tells me that it's really been sold as some sort of demo / exec car or something, (to tell you the truth, I don't remember exactly), but that I wouldn't want this car anyways since I wouldn't get a new car warranty, etc., and we should just forget about it, move on, and really look at an '04.
Just to be sure, a few days later I have my friend who lives near that dealership driver over there and check out my would-be 325Ci. Sure enough, they've got it, 15 miles, brand new, come on it.
So, I ask you, what happened here? Do you think the guy realized his $1500 leather mistake, and didn't/couldn't admit it for fear he'd have to honor his price? Recently on this board I've read of dealers "punching" their cars to take the factory cash - could that be what happened? Something else? I really feel kinda bad here, because my guy took care of me 110% all the way through, up until the very end where I feel I wasn't getting the straight story. Perhaps I should have been upfront about the leather thing, but I didn't jerk anyone around when it came time to put down my deposit and drive away.
Anyways, just wanted to see if anyone could tell me what most likely happened. Personally, I'm thrilled that deal DIDN'T go though, becuase I was able to pick up a 6 mo. old 330Ci a week after it fell through that I wouldn't have been able to afford new.
Thanks for your input!
