Cell phone charger that works in armrest

This is probably going to be of limited interest, but I was looking for a car charger that would charge my various mini-usb device and live in the armrest. I wanted something low profile enough that I could charge a cell phone with the armrest closed. That way, on a long trip, I can keep my phone charged and connected to Idrive via bluetooth.

It turns out that the OEM blackberry chargers than you can get for like $5 on Amazon fit perfectly, and they can charge most Blackberry phones, Motorola devices, Android phones, and probably the new Windows phones as well.

I was going to recommend the same device. I have one of those and an assortment of retractable cables that plug into iPhones, Blackberries, etc

You have to get the kind that folds in half. Check http://www.monoprice.com

I'm guessing you're referring to the cellular antenna that is included with the car.. Is that a 5 watt booster as well? Those used to be all the rage back in "the day".. :-)

In any case, what is needed to use the antenna in the car? I have Blue Tooth and assist, but I don't think I have the smart phone integration, which I think is required..

Thanks

Great thread, have been meaning to get a new charger because the one I currently have sticks up to where I can't put the arm rest down. Thanks for all the links.

No you don't. As I said above, Blackberry sells a low profile charger, that you can get for about $5 on Amazon, that fits fine.

That said, monoprice sells stuff that is of extremely high quality at very low prices. So, that is a good option as well.

There isn't. But, I also don't see why I would spend $150 on a phone-specific cradle, when I change phones every few years. Instead, I spent $5 on a charger, and I get the exact same functionality.

Agreed...iPhone is a break-up phone. Where I work full of tall buildings, no chance to have any reception, can't even text.

By the time I get off 10-15 messages will pop up and It was 8 hours too late.
Most sensitive friends don't get why I didn't return called or text back

Will order the Belkin one for my armrest. Thx

Weirdly this Belkin doesn't work in the central arm rest of my e91. My tyre inflator works in the armrest power source so there's obviously power going through it. Any tips?

What do you mean!?
Twist to find the right angle might help. I have had that problem.

Maybe unplug, rotate slightly, then re-plug. Sometimes twisting over a period of times causes the outlet to loosen. Better to find out why good contact isn't being made and address that problem.

Thanks for the thread, will order one soon.

I just upgraded to an HTC One X from Moto Atrix, which was a piece of crap. The Costco deal includes a bonus pack, but the car and wall combination charger would not fit in the armrest, in fact it would not even fit on a wall outlet if the outlet is shared. How can someone be allowed to design something like that?

I actually upgraded to an iPhone 4S first, but the screen was just too small to enjoy a good HD movie on it, and it does not wrap the text to fit the screen after pinch and zoom. Back to Android.

You can buy those at any CVS pharmacy store for a $1. They have them right by the checkout. They also have a blister pack in the electronics area that comes with a cable and the wall charger as well.

You can also get a charge by plugging into the USB port under the armrest, but in my experience it charges at only about half the rate. The bonus is that is stays powered up for some time after the car is shut off.

Does it need to live in the arm rest? There is a 12v outlet under the glovebox near the center console.

This is what I saw at CVS, not $1 but $14. It did have two USB ports I guess can charge two phones.

The ones I'm talking about are usually by the cash register in a big plastic container, like gum balls. They aren't in any sort of packaging.
