E39 Steereing Angle Sensor HELP
Hi there all,
I have the dsc light come on every time I restart and drive for about 20-50 yards. Took it to my friends shop and plugged the a Snap-on Solus Pro to scan it, and it returned left front speed sensor and steering angle sensor. We jacked the car and turned the wheel to read its functionality on the scanner it works just fine it reads the Km/H so thats fine erased all codes and the problem is the steering wheel sensor, it reads -1434 which I dont know what it refers but turn the steering wheel one side to the other and no different read, still -1434, which logics says it is not functioning if it was ok the scanner would read actual position when turning. But my question is the following could it be posible that it may need recalibration or fully replace is needed? Or is there any other way to test its functionality? By the way I got the car last week. 2000 E39 540i with 20" wheels |

if the scanner is reading live data the steer angle value should change when the steering wheel is turned. If its not sending data the sensor needs to be replaced and then coded/calibrated.
http://eactuning.com/parts/product_details/32306793632 try to have him code and calibrate your existing one, if that does not work replace it. |

There is an excellent PDF of the entire sensing system and how to test the voltages of each of the 20-odd sensors in this system over here ...

I would have my friend try to recalibrate and code the actual sensor, since I dont know much of previous owner I dont know if they replaced any modules as it mentions on the pdf bluebee posted. I would keep you guys posted of what results are. Thanks for your fast response.

You might want to team up with BigCo540i who is working on calibrating one or all three of his steering angle sensors over in this thread ...
- Sometimes you have to bit the bullet and take it to an Inde- |

I have the DSC light on and had my local indy shop check the codes - sure enough it is the steering angle sensor. Then my indy mechanic says that he can't calibrate and I will need to take it to the dealer (aka stealer) for calibration. Can recal be done with the code reader tool? Anyone have a write-up? I tried turning the steering wheel lock to lock, but no reset after three drives. The sensor my need replacing, but I would rather try a reset/recal before dropping $300 on a new sensor. Thank you for any guidance!!

This is interesting and new enough information to warrant adding a reference so that a quick /steerng angle sensor(F3) in the VERY best of E39 Links will find your ideas more efficiently (see red below):
- All about DSC (1-pdf) (2-pdf) & comparisons to ASC+T (1) & how to diagnose & fix the amber ABS DSC (or ASC) BRAKE trifecta (1) or the amber ABS DSC (or ASC) bifecta (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) or just the DSC light (1) & what is the ABS control module testing pinout for the older E39s (1) & what is the logic of ABS diagnostics (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) & how to test the brake pressure sensor (1) & how to autopsy & fix your Bosch ABS control module yourself for free (1) (2) & what anomalies occur while the ABS control module is out of your vehicle for repair (1) (2) (3) & how to replace wheel speed sensors (1) (2) & why you want OEM wheel speed sensors (1) & what happens if you don't code your VIN into a new/salvage ABS control module (1) & how to test (and align) your E39 DSC steering wheel sensors (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) & how to turn off DSC traction control (1) (2). |
