Audi Q5 // BMW X3 comparison

Anyone compares both of them? I just need some opinion. My wife wants X3 but I want her to at least try other brand. We both don't like Merz GLK.

I hate local BMWs though. I guess we are both young married couple with baby don't fit into their client profile. Completely different experience with local Audi dealer. Although, few BMW dealers here are still great but longer drive ( 1 hour ).

If you do a search, you'll find countless Q5/X3 comps. It's a mixed bag of results with the X3 scoring higher points for performance and the Q5 winning on value.

Maestro, before you make a decision take a look at the XC60R -- 300 hp turbo inline six and very nice interior. I believe the new XC60R is the best of the bunch, but that's just an opinion of course.

Thanks but we will choose either Q5 or X3. Although, it'll be nice to get preferred Volvo parking at Legoland though.

Maestro,

Do search out past posts but not sure if there has been a titled thread Q5 vs X3 so far so I will give you the rundown on my very recent experience in choosing between the two vehicles.

I was in a similar situation to you in that we have a great Audi dealer who we leased our TT from and they have just been extra nice and accommodating on the service end, I really went in wanting to give them the business. In contrast, the BMW dealer who I bought my 3 Series from 5 years ago is not bad but you just don't get a cozy feeling going into the dealership...it's like a meat market bar scene.

In any case we first drove the Audi and tested both models, the 2.0T engine really really impressed both of us; lots of low end torque and solid gas mileage to boot. The engine is not as smooth as a 6 cylinder but has the power of one. The Q5 handled well, soaked up potholes and wrapped you in luxury, pretty typical Audi. After that visit I really thought I am getting a 2.0T...end of story. I then decided I would wait for the X3 test car to arrive at the dealer as this is a big purchase.

So a few days later, BMW calls and we go about 5 minutes after we got the call and take out the X28i. We liked the vehicle and thought it felt a bit easier to maneuver and handled better then the Q5 to us. The 28i engine was very similar to the Q5 and we thought the BMW interior was solid but fit and finish on the Audi is just a bit more polished. We drove the X35i and that engine is like having a caged animal under your foot, killer power and better gas mileage then the X28i but a lot more money.

So at this point we were pretty torn with a slight bias to the X3 and decided to drive all 3 models again. On the second drive the Audi just wasn't as impressive as the first time. Overall there were still a lot of things we loved about the vehicle but we started to nit pick little things like the driving position just didn't seem to fit as well as the BMW, the seats were not quite as comfortable and my significant other thought the very red backlit instrument cluster (Climate Control) was a bit busy and ugly (it was a night time demo). A

We drove the BMW's again and it felt like a better fit. I knew about what the Audi dealer was going to do on price and we had $1,500 in dealer loyalty for them to offer because of our TT. I said if BMW gives me a fair discount on the X3 then that is the decision and in the end I ended up with an X3.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one, if BMW low balled me on my trade or offered a crappy discount I would have pulled the trigger on the 2.0T and probably not looked back.

I do urge you to certainly drive both vehicles even if the local BMW dealer isn't the most welcoming.

Good luck,

JT

Congrats on your new purchase. I live in the Boston area and have been considering a Q5 since last summer. Wanted to wait for the X3 before deciding. I drove both models of each vehicle and have determined (at least for this week) that the X3 35i is best for what I like in a ride. I'm looking to trade in my '04 X5 and get a decent discount on the new X3. If you're comfortable sharing it, I'd appreciate hearing which BMW dealer you bought from and what type of deal they offered.
Thanks
Soon-to-be X3 owner

I have driven both and the new X3 35 is better than the Q5.

They are pretty much the same right up until you step on the gas pedal.

The new X3 is a bullet and will get me in a lot of trouble.

I agree with JT. If I don't sell mine separately when I am ready and they try to play price games I'll keep my current one and take it to the speed shop.

I'll let my wife decides. We'll visit Audi & BMW tomorrow. I'll post what she decides although I have feeling it'll be X3.

First year BMW - it's really for those who lease or trade in more often. Then, Audi isn't exactly known for reliability either. Acura MDX seems the best value in this case.

Verdict is out. We placed an order for X3 yesterday. We can buy either one and be happy. The main deciding factor is cargo space. Weird huh? But with baby & toddler, it seems X3 has bigger cargo space. Wife does like the smoothness drive of Audi and the power feel on X3. We drove about an hour and half away to do the comparison. We did buy 328i from them before. By far, it is the best BMW dealer experience. Not the cheapest dealer but they are straightforward with us all the time. We already got production number and dealer said hopefully in a week, status will change to ready to be built. They do offer fair trade in value for our 328i but we'll try Carmax.
