Thermostat question about gas mileage

Hey guys, I know I need a new thermostat. My temperature guage ( I know a dumby light) only goes to the first line past the cold mark so I think that it is stuck open. My question is this, does an open thermostat affect the gas mileage in a negative way, and if so, please explain why? I believe that I have an idea but I just want to make sure my thinking is correct.

My Theory:

The engine isn't operating at the normal high temperature which causes the air going into the engine not heat up at much as well. This in turn means that the air/fuel mixture is rich which causes me to use more fuel than normal.

My symptom:

I normally get 450-520 mile on a tank of gas. Now I am getting roughly 400-420 miles on a tank of gas. This is opposite from what it should be, in the colder months the mileage should go up due to densor air.

Any insight would be appreciated

You might be getting fewer miles to the tank because you are idling (warming) the car longer during the cold weather. Just a thought.

Regards....JL

Good thought but....

I am not a big fan of warming a car up. I pretty much start the car since it is garaged and then drive easy until the car warms up out of the cold area. I never drive the car real hard as it is though since most of the time it is just for my commute to work and back which is about 12-13 miles each way.
