Alternator Replacement X5 2002 4.6 si

All,

I am doing some research for a friend who owns a 2002 X5 4.6 si BMW. I myself have a 330i and have found the E46 forum very helpful in replacing and fixing many things myself.

My friend is not terribly mechanically inclined; however, I can hold my own a bit and wanted to see if anyone on here could point me to a Do It Yourself (DIY) for the replacement of the alternator?

Is there a Wiki for the E53 that has a bunch of service information all in one place?

Also for anyone that has actually has replaced the alternator yourself, how hard is the total replacement procedure on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the hardest?

What special tools are needed? How much do they cost and where can you purchase them?

Lastly, is this just a job that you recommend having a qualified BMW service tech perform or is it worth it to do yourself?

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

X5 Alternator Removal

Replaced alternator on neighbor's 2000 X5 last night. Tip - you do not have to left-hand thread unscrew the fan to remove it. Free the fan shroud and lay it back against the engine. This allows room to get the three 5 mm allen screws in front of the fan/viscous coupling Then the fan can be pulled out and then the shroud. Now alternator, belt tensioner, etc, work can proceed. If you need to unscrew the fan, get the BMW tool. We could not get it loose with multiple methods and the allen screws route was quick and easy.
