Alternator Replacement X5 2002 4.6 si

All,

I am doing some research for a friend who owns a 2002 X5 4.6 si BMW. I myself have a 330i and have found the E46 forum very helpful in replacing and fixing many things myself.

My friend is not terribly mechanically inclined; however, I can hold my own a bit and wanted to see if anyone on here could point me to a Do It Yourself (DIY) for the replacement of the alternator?

Is there a Wiki for the E53 that has a bunch of service information all in one place?

Also for anyone that has actually has replaced the alternator yourself, how hard is the total replacement procedure on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the hardest?

What special tools are needed? How much do they cost and where can you purchase them?

Lastly, is this just a job that you recommend having a qualified BMW service tech perform or is it worth it to do yourself?

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
