cost to install hitch both electric and manual

$770 for the automated hitch including trailer wiring plus $69 for 2 inch ball on adjustable plate and or $69 for 2 inch adaptor for use with accessories such as bike rack
Manual hitch with trailer wiring is $610 and you will need a little more of a cut out on underneath dust cover for your hand to access turn knob plus the above ball or adaptor
Manual with no wiring is $490 plus you will need the adaptor or towball and shipping handlin and insurance will be $70
We do not cut anything on painted part of the bumper, only grey plastic underneath dust cover

-Thanks for the info. With a 2" ball, what will the X3 tow? And what about a 3" ball?

Are the tow ratings limited by the ball and other hitch hardware, or by manufacturer recommendation?

hitch ratings

The tow ratings are determined by the manufacturer and i believe i have seen the f25 x3 now rated up to 4400 lbs. which gives it about 350-400 lb tongue weight capability. we can supply with 1 7/8" ball, 2 inch ball, or 2 5/16" ball

-Thanks. I am curious (and obviously a towing newb) what difference the ball diameter makes when the tow rating is fixed. Please explain.

4400lbs?? I thought it was still 3500lbs!! If it's true, that is some good news.

Anyone have experience installing the Execuhitch for the X3? I'd like to have a hitch simply for my bicycle carrier, but installing the hitch is probably not a task I'm up to myself. So, if I buy the hitch from Execuhitch where would I go to have it installed? The BMW dealer? A body shop? U-Haul???? Any specific suggestions in the Washington DC area would be very much appreciated.

Towing Capacity

I have been trying to get the true skinny on what the maximu towing capacity of the 2011 and 2012 X3 really is. I've seen anywhere from 3500# to 5200#.

Seems like the 2010 and prior years had 3500#.

Does anybody know what it really is for the latest model?

-I believe in this country the lawyers say it's 3500lbs. In EU it's 5200lbs. Which in my mind makes the "real" answer 5200lbs.

Mein Auto: '06 Civic, thinking of X3
Hello, new member here. Found this thread via Google. Also very interested what the official tow capacity of X3 (F25) really is, and understanding the hitch options. Want to upgrade from my '06 Civic to something much nicer which can also tow my boat, but not too large or fuel-thirsty. X3 35i seems to fit the bill.

My boat and single-axle trailer together weigh right around 3500 lbs. Trailer has surge brakes and 5-pin connector. Execuhitch seems very appealing, but I see from the pics that it only has 4-pin connector. Is it available with 5-pin? I understand the 5th pin is for reverse lights, which is also used to override the surge brakes while going in reverse, so they don't engage. Otherwise one has to use a mechanical device to prevent brake engagement- and remember to remove it...
Thanks

My metric converter says 3500 kg = 7716 lbs. That surely can't be correct.

The BMWUSA website finally lists a tow hitch for the X3.

Here's the link:

http://www.shopbmwusa.com/ProductDet...cessories.aspx

It says it fits all X3 models and does not require cutting the bumper cover. I plan to call my local dealership to get a price quote for installation. Online on the BMWUSA site the quote for a local dealer was about $1200 installed ($700 for the hitch kit).

About the same price as Execuhitch. I just installed it on our X3, gonna do a DIY writeup soon, with pics to augment the supplied instructions. Overall it's a fairly easy install. Certainly worth doing to save $500.

The BMW site in my area list the price as $1,078 installed. I was going to go the Execuhitch route but since the BMW kit states it integrates with the Park distance control and the stability control systems I think I will go the official BMW kit. It also comes with 4 and 7 wire trailer plugs so I will have more options.

I also just noticed the official hitch now listed and came here to post it; I see I was beaten to the punch, LOL. That is great news. Especially the 7/4 trailer plugs. Would somebody please try towing a ~3500 lbs. boat/trailer using it (or Execuhitch), and share your experience, to help me decide whether to buy an X3 35i (vs. something bigger, more fuel-thirsty, and less fun)?

I just called my two local BMW dealers near Raleigh, NC concerning the BMW hitch:

Leith BMW wants $1500+ for parts and installation. Claims programming is required.

Performance BMW wants $1500 for installation plus the cost of parts - so $2200+. These guys clearly don't want my business.

Needless to say I am not happy with the installation costs.

That stinks. BMW of Tulsa quoted me $778 for parts, total price with installation $1199.

2011 and 2012 X3 trailer hitch available

Hi, New to BMW's and new to the list--I just got the call that the trailer hitch, pictured below, is now available--limited quantities...story says there were an initial 10 units that were snapped up--I had a standing order which puts me in the second group of ten. They are allegedly $700 - ish installed plus another $700 - ish for wiring installed. I was cautioned at length that the wiring must MUST be the type that isolates the X3 from the trailer load...that is, do not try to tap the brake lights, directional lights, etc with the direct bulb loads--must have the isolating module that drives the trailer loads via sense lines and a direct 12VDC source.

I've got mine set up so when my 2012 X3 35i shows up, the hitch and wiring will be dealer-installed.

The parts pictorial:

X3 trailer hitch available-further

Hi,

As usual, I should have added the following to my initial post: the expense of the installations is quite high--the physical installation requires the rear bumper be removed, the under-pan has to be cut (there is a trim piece for when hitch is not in use), then the wiring has to be installed (of course one doesn't just "install" the wiring---lots of surgery involved) and the software has to be recoded to accept the trailer wiring.

I have been quoted $700 for the hitch, complete, in a box plus $700 for the wiring kit and all labor to install the hitch and wiring. Total: $1400 at first pass........

As I understand it, there is a hole cut in the rear underpan so the hitch ball piece can pass through--there is allegedly a dress cover for the hole for when the hitch is not in use.

As you might expect, there is no delivery date on the next batch other than "soon".

good luck all

John

-If installation is anything like the Execuhitch (and it must be), the wiring is actually pretty easy. If you've ever spliced into a wire before, this isn't out of your reach as a DIY. The physical installation is even easier. Sorry again for not posting my pics yet...soon...been really busy.

Problems continue

While driving down the road the rear hatch of my new X3 popped open and spilled the contents of my trunk all over the roadway. A couple of nights later the car went dead and could not be started. After 3 days in the shop I got it back with a door ding! The hitch they said could be installed when I bought the car months ago is still not available and the transmission should be replaced! It is however quiet and handles well...
