E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

wheel alignment considerations.

i believe my front left wheel is turning slighting outwards with my steering wheel in default position, I would like an wheel alignment performed. However, i am not sure if i have power steering on my car, because i've heard it affects the tools required for the alignment process. My question is, how do i know if i have power steering on my car and if so does it affect the alignment tool/process?

thanks in advance for reply.

All US 1 series BMWs have servotronic power steering. Perhaps you don't know if you have Active Steering which does make the alignment more expensive. So check your original window sticker.

It should also be listed on your original invoice (bill of sale).

Active Steering alters the steering ratio according to speed. So the steering will be "quicker" (fewer turns of the steering wheel necessary for a given amount of front wheel turn) at low speeds and "slower at highway speeds.

If you can't tell whether or not you have this, I'm sure your dealer can assist you.

Tom

I'm assuming the OP has a 135, since if it's the 128 there's no question: No active steering option on the 128, so then he'd know he doesn't have it.....

What makes you think your wheel is turned slightly out? Is your car pulling to the left? The reason I ask is because my 135i pulled slightly to the left since the day I bought it (2 years ago). I mentioned this several times to my SA, and they checked the alignment and found nothing awry. Then, two months ago, my car was due for a brake flush and voila! the problem immediately disappeared. I can only assume my front left rotor was dragging ever so slightly.
