X1 E84 (2011 - current)
The new to the US BMW X1 will arrive at BMW dealers in the fall of 2012 as a 2013 model year. Get your X1 28i with either sDrive (RWD) or xDrive (AWD) or get the US exclusive I6 N55 powered X1 35i dDrive.

The new BMW X1 xDrive28i with BMW TwinPower Turbo

While the X1 has been delayed coming to the US and there is no guarantee that Americans will get this engine option the thought of a twin turbo four cylinder small SUV it exciting!

With its powerful, sporty and elegant styling, supreme agility, luxurious functionality and innovative equipment features, the BMW X1 is a trailblazer in the premium compact segment in terms of driving pleasure. Yet again BMW has successfully transplanted the BMW X model concept to a new vehicle segment to create a unique product. Now the BMW X1 is breaking new ground, this time in terms of the BMW EfficientDynamics program. Is it just me or does the kidney grill just seem tall on the X1?

Otherwise I think the X1 is an intriguing prospect from BMW. I am much more prone to look at a compact SUV since I prefer a smaller vehicle. I'll be interested in seeing the car in person to have a better perspective on it.

I imagine this new turbo-4 and the regulatory challenges in getting it federalized are why the X1 isn't coming to the states until the fall. It sure looks like a sweet powerplant. The 2.0L direct injected turbo-4 that VW and Audi uses is supposed to be a fantastic power plant. I imagine this one will be far and away better than that one.

Nice!

With a manual transmission, this is *obviously* my next car. This is plenty of power and a really compelling package of weight, performance, and fuel economy. I live in Seattle which means I need to parallel park in the city and get to my favorite trail heads on weekends. This is the perfect car/SAV.
But if it's automatic only, then it's simply unacceptable. I don't drive automatics. I'll drive a front-wheel drive VW manual before an AWD BMW automatic. Here's hoping!

Have you seen the M sport version? Wowzers! Very good looking with the M body pieces!

Hopefully the manual will come to the USA.

And I can't help but remember 1998, when I took delivery of my brand-new E36 M3. What a car! 240 freakin' horses! 240!!! Who would ever need more power than that?

Agreed! The new X1 looks really sharp. I'm curious to see who brings a manual, AWD SUV to the US first: the VW Tiguan, Audi Q3, or BMW X1. If only one of them does it, they will sell plenty of units. If all three do it, then it could be unprofitable for all three.
In the meantime, I continue to enjoy my 2006 X3 3.0i w/ m-sport, premium, xenons, pdc, etc. It has only 28K miles on it, so I have plenty of time for this market to evolve.

Why do you think that whoever brings a manual transmission cute ute to the US will sell plenty of units?

I'm willing to bet my life that less then 5% of all X1/X3/X5 sales in the US are manual transmissions.

Americans don't want manual transmissions. Well over 90% of all BMWs sold in the US are automatics.

Is the Mini Countryman based upon the X1? I heard they are very similar, same underpinnings, etc.

What I was trying to say is this: If one manufacturer offered a manual, AWD, compact SUV, then all of the manual demand would get funneled to the one option. That could make it profiable to offer the manual-AWD drivetrain option. However, if BMW, VW, Audi, Mini all offered manual-AWD combinations, then it's possible none of them would break even given the relatively low demand for manuals in the US.
Personally, I only drive manuals. So, if there is no manual-awd compact SUV when it's time to trade my X3, I'll consider other options like the A4, GTI, 3-series. But I won't buy an automatic SUV or automatic anything. The X1 4-cylinder turbo with a manual transmission is my preferred option.

why not get the Mini Countryman All4?

It comes standard with a manual transmission, or BMW's 6sp steptronic is optional for around $1,200

Its a clone of the X1, but actually has more cargo space.

I sat in one, and I'm too tall. I'm 6'2", but I have more of my height in my torso. The Countryman felt very cramped and it felt like I'd be craning my head to see stop lights all the time.

Mini Countryman is mostly front wheel drive car with rear wheels working only when front one slip.
X1 is opposite.

what makes you think the X1 would fit you then? Its my understanding the interior dimensions are nearly identical but I haven't checked interior passenger volume, etc.

Anyone have specs for both?

I'm 6' and the Countryman was reasonably comfortable for me...although I'm not quite sold on it....I like it...but am also considering a VW GTI, Subaru WRX hatchback and a few other hatchbacks.

In the X1, from most reports, the front passengers sit in a position pretty much just like a 3 series. It seems reasonable to assume that while the dimensions are similar (save for the fact the X1 is over 10 inches longer), it is set up differently. There are sites that have side by side pics and they're definitely arranged differently.

To others - the turbo 4, btw, is the confirmed engine for the X1 launch. I believe it was autoweek that drove the new X1 with it.

As I as understand it, the X1 and Countryman have the same platfomr more or less. I sat and drove the Countryman here in Puerto Rico and I was very impressed with it. But Im leaning towards the 335d but I really like the X1, I sat in and test drove a Tiguan so Im looking at the same size
