MIL Light caused by Maintenance Issues?

I went to test drive a 02 745i that I am pretty sure I'm going to buy. The Yellow Check Engine (MIL) light was on in the dashboard but the owner told me it was because there were some maintenance items that he didn't reset. He went to the car data page on the iDrive and a few items were red but he said he did them. Is the check engine light independent of this? I want to know because if not, I will be bringing my scan tool to see what's going on.

Bring your scan tool, MIL is independent of maintenance items. Even better, make him take it to a BMW dealership and get them to pull the full service history and list of current/recent faults for you -- my personal opinion is that a longer is better; many of the early modules had revisions made, so if a lot have been replaced, it could be a good thing for you. I think the user BigDogs750Li (or something to that effect) is up in Michigan as well, you might contact him.

No, just someone around that area who might be able to give things on the car to look out for, or good/bad area dealerships based on his experiences.
