Unhappy Transmission Program Switch Problem

Hi,
I got a 1986 535i

When i try to start it it will not turn over. But every time i try to start it there is a click noise coming from the program switch that switches between the E S and the 321 switches. When i place the dial to S or 321 and try to start the car, I will still ear the sound, but it will reset the dial to E

If you could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

for a no crank condition, i suggest starting with the battery to make sure it's good. ther is nothing worse than spending hours chasing your tail after ghosts when a weak battery was the source.

if no power to the starter, then the neutral safety switch and ignition switch would be the next items in line to check.
