Not a car audio expert. Have a few questions

I am too old for a set of 12's or 15's in the trunk but i do like to jam out when I dont have the kids with me. Right now i have an e46 sedan with non hk radio. I would like to get some higher quality sounds and bass out of my car. I don't want so much bass that the cars around me can feel it and my review mirror falls off. I just want good quality sound without being obnoxious. Would i be better to add a sub and amp to my trunk or just upgrade the existing speaker setup. I will not be upgrading the head unit as I do not want to mess up the factory look of the car. Any input or recommendations would be great.

Well, I just happened to be looking earlier at some things with my Harman Kardon system... and I noticed someone selling an upgrade.
Here is the kit, but it looks like a lot to put together for DIY.
