Prod schedule moved up - Need advice

Got an email from the sales manager from BMW Military Sales - Korea stating the production schedule was moved up a month on my 35i SA and is now scheduled for the end of Feb (still won't receive shipment until late Apr).

I know I should be ecstatic, but I recall reading somewhere (please don't ask where because I really can't remember) that there may be changes, possibly for the better, starting on Apr 2011 builds.

Does anyone know if there are any significant changes expected for Apr 2011 builds? Don't know if it's possible at this point, but I have no issues telling the sales manager to delay production if it means getting an updated something/anything. Please advise.

Isn't it about then when they will switch their model year and start puttig 2012 VIN numbers in them ??
and if that is so, then most OEMs schedule MY changes for that.

they will probably drop the 35d for the 40d in the USA; i would try to wait or even back it out a bit

Marlbro:

I have no idea when they will start coming out with 2012 VINs, but thanks for the heads up as I will definitely ask the sales manager tomorrow. As for the diesel variant, i've already placed the order on the 35i and at this point do not regret ordering the gasoline engine over the diesel. as for the 40d, i've read on previous posts that the euro-only 40d will probably not make it to the U.S. and I'm afraid my current vehicle will not last long enough to wait.

Well on the VIN, mine was built in July 2009 and has a 2010 VIN number.
I bought it in April 2010, and ever since I've been on this Forum, people have been talking about their 2011s.
I asked about when the change took place, and I'm fairly certain I got the April answer back, but I can't find that post now !

buying a 35i is not a bad choice; I would go for a 40d next just to have more power.
if I could afford it, I would go X5M, but that is too rich for my blood.
Diesel is cheaper over here, and it uses les of it, so easy choice really.

Marlbro:

currently working in korea and gasoline prices are actually cheaper than diesel...granted i won't get the gas mileage of a diesel = more trips to the gas station...

this will be my first bmw purchase so depending on the joy/cost of ownership, i may look at trading in for a diesel down the road...but for now i'm content.

besides possibly being a 2012 VIN, do you know of any other changes/updates that may be rolling out come Mar/Apr that would be worth a longer wait?

I read elsewhere that 2012 production will start in April and it will include at least BMW Connected and LED Halos and maybe more.

i've heard the same about the BMW Connected (assuming you're talking about Option Code 6NR) and the LED DRLs. Problem is no one seems to know exactly what BWM NA has up it's sleeve...

additionally, would the BMW Connected require additional payment? the option code was not available when i initially built the vehicle back on New Years Eve. I can sort of see how the LED DRLs may be phased in starting with the Apr builds, but at what point will 6NR be available through the ordering system?

Finding it hard to get more details at the moment, but will advise if I get something.

Thanks. Contacted the sales manager yesterday and he shot off an email to BMW AG to see if there are any changes planned and hopefully i get something back on the matter. If i get anything more definitive, I'll provide an update.

This is interesting. I have been pricing out my military sales 2011 X5, but had no idea they would roll out 2012 models as soon as April. Is this true?

Also would like to hear any other "upgrades" the newer model year is to get.

Surfrider:

After talking to the sales manager, BMW Military Sales - Korea has not received any updated price lists to date and didn't know when "2012" VIN numbers would be implemented. FYI, his current price list still matches what many other users here with 2011's post-10/10 (I placed my order on 12/31/2010).

He also mentioned that military sales does not always follow the exact schedule as BMW NA, even though military sales only provides US-spec vehicles. As such, he has to go through BMW AG to see if there will be any modifications to the price list and if so, when that list will be available to military sales. I should be getting some feedback here soon so I'll let you know.

Don't know if you're purchasing through Military Sales - Korea, or some other Military Sales program, but you may want to talk to you respective sales manager to see if he/she knows of any updates planned for this year and if you get a definitive answer, I would hold off on placing the order until then.

Lastly, thank you for your service and stay safe while you serve abroad.

Quick update...confirmed with the sales manager that X5s going into production starting in April will be MY2012.

No definitive answers yet on changes, if any, expected for MY2012 X5s.

Final update.******s manager stated the LED DRLs will not be available for US-spec X5s for MY2012 (starting april '11). he thinks connected drive (6NR) will be available for order on MY2012's but he has not yet received any updated pricing sheets and so no confirmed dates on when that option will be available.

Looks like i'm still going to delay the order to pick up the MY2012 X5, but really was hoping for some upgrades....oh well.

I received a call from my salesman here in Germany (Military Sales) to tell me that he received a message from BMW last night stating that the 35i Premium and 35i Sport will begin 2012 production starting 01 May, but, the 35d will not begin until Oct. The reason he gave me was that they are going to put the 4.0d in the 2012 and the current diesel engine will be put into the X3. I am living here in Germany and will still order the 2011 35d, reason: pricing. The 4.0d will probably also see the new 8 speed tranny also. For me, I can't see paying a extra 3-4K or so for a few more horses and torque, especially for a car that already drives wonderfully, I would rather have more options.

I had been wondering if they were going to cut over the US market to the 40d/8-speed in April... Sounds like they are not. Too bad... I would consider the 40 diesel with an eight speed, but think the 35i is the clear winner over the 35d/six speed.

So far, zero identified changes for the 2012 X5's in April other than 6NR?
I'm pretty sure I can live without facebook and twitter in my X5.

I am contemplating pushing my Feb 24 X5 35i delivery six weeks or so to and end up with a 2012, but I would loose my $2,500 holiday cash and also pay an additional (likely) $500 or so bump in base price. Not sure it's worth $3,000 it will cost me unless there are going to be some changes to the early 2012's!

pfbz, I understand that. Regardless what you do, they will continue to tweek/add things to vehicles. I basically comes down to choice and what you are willing to live with/without. But, $3,000 is $3,000. IMHO, it is not worth loosing for that feature.

Just like for me, 25 more hp and a 0-60 time of 6.4 instead of 6.9 is not worth a couple grand which is what I am estimating. You figure, bigger engine plus new tranny = more money, more money.

Think of it this way though, no matter what you decide, you win, you will be driving one of the nicest vehicles on the road IMHO.

Enjoy.

@Sputnee...looks like we were told different dates for MY2012. Getting a little tired of all the misinformation from my sales rep...

@pfbz...agree with Sputnee. For me, delaying production provides a little more flexibility financially and i dont have to drive a brand new vehicle during monsoon season. It would have been nice to see some substantial upgrades for apr...but seeing that there wont be...i would take advantage of the rebates/discounts if i were you.

Thanks to both for the feedback.

If nothing else, the resale factor makes it worth waiting if the difference is just 2-3 months or so. In 4 years, a 2011 and a 2012 bought within 3 months of each other will have very similar mileage. But a 2012 with x miles is going to be worth a premium over a 2011 with x miles, even if the changes between the models are small.

I agree with that, but probably not $3000 if everything is similar!

I did a quick lookup of a 2007 vs 2008 X5 trade value with same equipment and mileage and the 2008 was valued $2000 higher.

Don't know if anyone is still monitoring this particular thread, but for those interested, here is the latest information I received reference MY2012.

Received some email traffic between BMW Military Sales - Korea and BMW AG (quoted below) and it looks like vehicles produced during week 14 will be MY2012. Additionally, the Model code on my order sheet changed from "1197 X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity" to "12XH X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity."

"Order XXXXXXX has been written to a MY 2012 X5. Please rework the order specification with the customer once the ordering guide and/or price list have been released by BMW NA. The order is currently requested for production in week 14 (April 2011)"

Trying to find out when the new ordering guide and/or price list is available and as soon as I get feedback, will repost.

It's the changes (if any) for 2012 that I'm really waiting to hear about...

I don't expect many changes, but I don't expect zero changes either.

i'm assuming the new ordering guide and/or price list will reveal changes, if any, for MY2012 and I'll share them once I get feedback from the sales manager. only reason for posting the last message was because there was some confusion as to when the MY2012 would be available (Apr vs May) and the word that i received was that MY2012 would starting rolling out with the Apr builds.

I hope that they have taken care of the wheel hubs and brake caliper claws rusting only 5 months into ownership.
My dealer said they will paint them at their costs, but that BMW would not even here it although in other years, other lines, like the 5 & the 3, had that problem, but BMW sorted it out by ENGINEERING it right.

Another nice to have would be to ensure that the sun roof drains are large enough to clear water in HEAVEY rain.

hopefully they might adopt the new 6 series way of hiding the Rear Camera in the rondal until it's needed keeping it clean.
It's a real bitch at night when you need it, but it's got dirty whilst driving in the winter months (little tech innovations like that are normally BMW trade marks)

Talked to my military sales rep regarding MY2012 and she only had the following to say:

Quote:
so, yes we got word this week that there is no more production available for the X5 2011 MY and the 2012 MY will begin in April. not expecting any major changes or even minor ones, might get a slight price increase we did on the 5 series of about 400 dollars on the base price, but that's about it. should be getting the new price guides soon so when I do I shall pass them onto you.
