of all time? my own opinion. E46 M3.
But I also think the E39 and E60 M5s are amazing.

I'm sure you'll get a ton of different answers based on different reasons and no definite conclusion. Perhaps you are just starting a general discussion about BMWs...
You man want to start a Poll but not in this E46 forum, otherwise the results will be skewed. Everyone should qualify their response with what they have owned and for what reason they selected what they did. Here's my opinion (previously owned 2002s, E21, E30, E34, E36, E46): IMO the style of BMWs have changed since the E38 and I like the original styles best. I also like lightweight cars as they handle more effortlessly. It's diffucult to compare quality since there are too many aspects, but overall tactile quality has progressively decreased since the E30. Given my priorities, I'd have to say the E36 strikes a good balance. Although the quality is not the best, it still looks classic with a modern touch. The E34 is a close second but it's a tad heavy. The E30 drives better that either of them, but exterior styling leaves more to be desired (minus the M3, which is awesome, but not a great daily driver). For all out performance, the most modern cars win, but at the expense of driver involvement. |

it all depends on personal preference, some people want something small not too big that is single come with all out performance and handling, that would be the 3 series, the m3 is just more advance.. some people want luxury intact also with performance but not too much handling and have a family, that would be the 5 series the m5's are just more advance....the 7 series is just for all out luxury and showboating it has performance but it is more geared towards luxury...so my opinion is not what is the best bmw ever made, its what the drivers personal preference is that makes it the best ever made.. ps. I think the older model bmw's e30's thru e46 has the true bmw feel...the e90 and e60's etc has it but its too quiet..you dont really feel the bmw aggressiveness come out like they use to make them back in the day.. unless you doing 80 and you punch the gas.. again this is my personal opinion

Maybe this thread should have been called whats your favorite bmw of all time.
To elaborate on my first post, My e46 with 100k miles drives better than most modern car's i've been in. Granted its only a 325, it feels much better built than many other cars. Even wrenching on the thing is easy to some extent and makes good sense. Parts are a dime a dozen and there are many many shops that are willing to work on them. |

Hands down BMW M1, way ahead of it's time. Like the Porsche 959. Brought on a new generation of BMWs- the M series.

Despite its poor handling, I think the Z8 was the best looking BMW ever made.

To me, the car that is most recognizable as a BMW and just is pure Bavarian design is the E38 '01 740il sport. Close second and third would be E46 and E39.

Of the 5 BMW vehicles I've owned, I think the e34 535i was the best. It is the ultimate combination of Performance, Durability and Luxury. Debbie's favorite was the e46.
We had a Z4 coupe out at an Ultimate Drive event. It gets Honourable mention as my fav. of all the 'drive event' BMWs I'll never own. Every other BMW we've owned or driven falls well below those three. Last edited by Andrew*Debbie; 01-27-2011 at 07:45 AM. |

what a fantastic query!
I can only respond on the basis of the cars I've either owned or driven. It may be surprising, but my personal best for comfort and practicality was the silver 2003 4.4 litre X5 I used to own. I don't know why I sold it. I would like to meet the lucky bastard who bought it! I loved my first Beemer - 2001 black 328i . Loved the woodgrain and the quality. I would like to meet the lucky bastard who bought it! My 335i was just OK ~ nothing special. The 2008 M6 I drove was a beauty (from the inside). But my best, very best, is my current daily drive ~ my 2005 E46 silver M3. I took a while to come to terms with the SMG , but now I rush from the office to my car space just to drive it (her). It's a perfect size for one. Sometimes two (my dog - Maggie). (She loves me). It's quick and agile. I've never had a problem (those Germans know what they're doing) and after 67,500 mms I've just changed the tyres (which just about sent me bankrupt - true love! ). The M3 gets my vote. Rob |
