545i smg shift knob

I have an 05 545i with the smg. I was wondering if anyone knows if you can replace the stock shift knob with one of the m series ones that lights up? If you does it plug right in or is there wireing required? Any help or suggestions woudl be great.

Yes, it is possible. I have the lighted, SMG gear selector from the M5 in my E61.

To do this, you need to buy the gear selector from BMW, and it is crazy expensive because it is made by Bang & Olufsen for some odd reason.

Then, you need to buy a specially made wiring harness. There is a guy in CA that makes these, and he also includes instructions (with pictures) on how to do the install. He posts on a different, 5 Series message board.

I am an idiot when it comes to anything electronic, so I had the tech at my local BMW service department install it. It took him 15 minutes, plus some industrial strength glue.

Send me a PM if you would like more information.
