HELP. Just filled my gas tank yesterday. After that the fuel gauge now reads "E". What do I need to do to fix it? Any idea of cost? Can you do it yourself? Had an oil change done the same day at Jiffy Lube and they put dry gas in the lines, would that cause it? Thanks. dinscoe@cox.net |

Likely a faulty sending unit.

Try not topping off the tank after you fill it up, Ive heard that can mess up the gauge for some reason. But the sending unit could be bad also.

sounds like a fuel sender unit.
I heard there's 2 sender units in the tank, 1 take care of the top half and the other for the bottom half. If you try to Google, you will find something about re-soldering the connections at the sender unit. BTW, as you will be working so close next to your fuel tank, don't do anything stupid! |

The fix for mine was simple......
when you are driving, lock your doors. I think it has something to do with the fuel door acuator, it reads better when it is locked |

Fuel level low
I had the AA out to my bmw as it wouldnt start. He traced the fault to a sticking fuel pump. He did some tests with the wiring and now my fuel level gauge shows empty( with the warning light on also).
I have fitted a brand new pump unit which includes a new sender, gauge still showing empty. The gauge was working fine before the AA man messed about. The sender unit off the old one is also working fine. Does anyone know if there are additional fuses for the gauge, although there is 12volts at the sender unit. Any help appreciated. Ken |

Obviously the first thing to do is go back and check your connections.

With ingnition off, pull fuse 46, turn ignition on and back off, reinstall fuse. Turn ignition on and see if it has cleared. It worked. The suggestion said if 46 didn't work, try the same procedure with #31. It depends which one is dash displays for your model. My 1995 325i liked #46. IT WORKED beautifully for my 1995 325i vert. It is also suggested, whenever you fuel-up, don't just turn ignition off...remove the key to keep from having a repeat. |
