12 mpg on 2010 335--is that normal?

Hi there,

I used to get an average of 14 mpg in my 2010 335 convertible with mostly city driving. My car is coming off of warranty in 3 days, so I took it to the dealer last week. They changed the engine air filter and now the mileage reading has dropped to 12 mpg (I reset it after getting the car). 14 mpg seemed low--12 is even lower. According to the dealer, there was nothing wrong with the car (no error codes etc) and the reading I am getting for mpg is normal and just based on how I drive the car.

Any ideas on what (if anything) may be wrong?

Thanks very much for your help.

Bad gas? E15? I don't know if that would cause it or not. You could get that poor mpg under normal conditions, but you wouldn't have to ask why. Drop the Hammer on the 335 and it will slurp down fuel. I get about 24 mpg avg. that is half interstate and half suburban. In city driving it seems to be 17 or 18 mpg. Only hwy. it get 30+. I use E0 fuel. N4S

Touch low. I get 21.7 averaged over many thousand mi. Chipped.

You should respond to DSX - steady 60 mph result?

Drive in sport mode? Race to the next red light? Use premium gas?

some more details

Here are some more details. I have a stick shift and use premium gasoline. The average speed shown is 28 mph. I do drive the car hard, but 12 mpg seems low to me. The car is due for an oil change in January (BMW wont do the annual oil change sooner) so perhaps that may make a slight difference, but still shouldn't cause the mpg to be that low. I will drive it on the highway at 60miles straight and see what I am getting as well.

Oil change shouldn't change your MPG. You must be driving it very hard. I drive mine fairly hard and still get around 18 to 19 mpg city and I have a manual transmission. On the highway I see 27 mpg at a speed of 75 MPH. On back roads at 60 MPH I see 30 mpg using 5th gear.

Are your tires inflated properly?

tires

Thanks. The tires do have the right air pressure--I checked.

I don't think the dealership will take the car in for low mpg since there are no fault codes. Is there anything else that you can recommend I do? Is it worth taking to the dealer and speaking with the manager to see if they can run a diagnostic?

My guess is you're going to see 25+mpg on the highway. With a lot of low mph trips while driving "hard" I don't think 12 is out of the +- 1 sigma range.

The mileage of 28 interstate is just a touch low so I would guess you have normal function. I think 12 is right because you are pounding the car hard in town if I read what you stated. I don't think there is anything wrong with your car what so ever. Drive the car for 30 miles interstate after resetting the mpg and see if it shows 28 again. I ran Pilot Sports from my Conti Run Flats and my mileage dropped from 30 to 28 mpg, I am running Michelin Primacy Run Flats and get 31 mpg hiway.
Before wasting anymore time and money do a hiway run and see what the result is for a steady state 30 miles...

That is really low, I drive mine 100% city, always in DS, it is running GIAC Stage II with open filters, IC upgrade, hiflow downpipes and I drive it hard stoplight to stoplight and it always gets 17.1 mpg. If I take a roadtrip, it will do 23-25! I don't think I could get mine down to 12 no matter what I try!
