Cost of Unscheduled Oil Change?
Hello All,
I currently have 2300 miles on the odometer. I would like to schedule an oil change in the next two weeks. Does anyone know what the regular cost of an unscheduled oil change is? I just wanted to see what others have paid. I am probably going to go to one of two dealers near where I live rather than the dealer I bought my car from just due to convenience, hopefully that should be a non-factor for this service and subsequent scheduled services. Would also be interested to hear if other members stick to the dealers they purchased the car from or not. Thanks!

The cost of an unscheduled change at my dealer is about $120.00. I think mine is a little on the high side as far as dealers in the NY/NJ area go. The dealer you bought the car from should make no difference in the price really.
In the past I used to use Prestige BMW in Ramsey for service because it is closest to my office, though maybe it is just my bad luck, but whenever I took it to them, I always came back with a scratch or a dent of some sort on my car. They would always pay for the repair, but after 2 times of this, I just use the dealer closest to my home now which is also where I buy my BMWs too.

When you do an unscheduled oil change will the service guy reset the oil reminder? Or do you tell them not to? Lastly if not reset but oil is changed does that change the actual scheduled service or is the reminder just a timer.. In other words, does the car know the oil is new??

Here's my breakdown:
Oil on sale at Autozone: 7 Qts: 35 tax inclu. FIlter: 10 bucks at dealer, say you belong to CCA, they didn't even ask for card. Labor: Free did it myself. (Take it to any garage they should do it for $25 bucks) Me Total: $45 You: $70-90 but no more. This is the easiest oil change in any car I've ever done. The oil pan drains out a bolt parallel to the ground. Oil flows out fast and complete. Filter is on top of engine makes it a breeze.

May I ask where did you have the oil changed?

$119 out the door in Denver (ouch). No reset on the meter.
I think I read somewhere that BMW oil is so much more expensive because it comes from special underground wells located in Bavaria. In order to maintain its purity, virgins must hand carry it out in individual buckets (think fire brigade).

Wow, that Concord, CA dealer is something else. It's $110-130 in southwestern CT depending on the dealer. Free Wi-Fi coffee, power bars and magazines while you wait. They do not reset the oil interval counter. Use only BMW synthetic oil or the recommended equivalent synthetic (see http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx). There is a big difference in synthetic oils.

Thanks for the various feedback everyone.
I will make an appointment this week will let you know what I get quoted but I guess it should be within the $100-$120 range. That $200 oil change is pretty outrageous. I was tempted by TJPark01's instructions but with near zero temperatures in my garage will leave that until the next unscheduled service. Thinking about sticking to a 7500 mile interval if the scheduled ones are 15000 miles. Mwares212 - Thanks for the heads up for Prestige, thats where I actually purchased the car, but its not really convenient for me. Will probably try Paul Miller or Bloomfield BMW.

Cost here varies between $50 (TJ's way) and $200 (stealers way).
But why bother about this cost? When you drive the car in a way that an extra oil chance is asked for, there will be other cost increasing factors on hand. That are more important than only the say 100 bucks per 8000 miles for some oil...... |

my local dealer just charged me $168. Absurd, but with the cost of a new engine being perhaps $10,000, who cares?

So I actually got 3 quotes, the two dealers quoted $129 and one for $135. I went with the higher quote since the dealer is about 10 minutes from where I live. When I did call around the standard response I got was to perform the service at the "scheduled time" and hence not pay for it. They seemed perplexed that I still wanted an oil change. Like I said previously I was going to get this done regardless. But it is interesting to note the wide variation others have experienced for a simple oil change based on I am assuming a fixed labor cost and fixed parts e.g. the oil and filter.
