Anyone Actually See the Heads Up Display on the X3?

The online images I've seen make it look like it is literally in the driver's vision - and not in a good way. Also, it seems like it only gives minimal information that is available elsewhere on the car.

Anyone seen this in action? Is it really a valuable and helpful feature, or just another profit center for BMW, and a waste for the buyer?

Doug

It's probably similar to that on the upper-level BMWs like the X5, 5er, and 7er and works best with navigation, as it will display arrows and distances on the HUD. I can't imagine a use for it without sat nav. In any case, it will display current speed, cruise control speed.

Local dealer has one but haven't gotten a chance to go see it.

I like it in our 5 series. With our without navigation, no need to look away from the windscreen to see the speed. No excuse for speeding :-0 Only problem I have had is with polarised sunglasses making it more difficult to see the HUD.

If we get an X3 we will definately be adding this option.

cheers
Ali

Thanks for that info, and for that link. But it still looks like (even on the German site) that the image is right in line with the driver's vision of the road. I realize the image isn't opaque, but isn't it a bit distracting? I ask these questions not to criticize, but to be informed as I am thinking of getting it on an X3 (along with NAV/iDrive, of course). Thank you!

The picture makes the HUD display look bigger than it is in real life. I've experienced it in a E60 (rare) and I would approximate the display area to be about 12cm wide x 8cm high......small enough so it's at the bottom of your field of vision, slightly higher than the instrument panel "angle". It is definitely transparent and not distracting.

I test drove an x3 with the HUD. I felt like the display image was slightly below what would be straight in front of my field of vision. At first I had trouble finding the image as my seat was too low and I was actually looking over it. I don't think it would block anything although, it was very dim because I wear polarized sunglasses.

My x3 is currently in production without the HUD.

I played around with the HUD system on a X5 during a PCD (Dec 2010) and there are adjustments in the iDrive menu for brightness and vertical adjustment of the projection. Wonder if dealers would be allowed to order this option for a non-priority 1 order?

This is a good representation of what you see. No need to look away from the view ahead.
