Front End Shaking?

I have a 97 BMW 318i and i just bought it. the only problem is that the front end shakes at 40-45 mph. I really have no idea what it is. I thought it would be the ball joints. but i dont know. if any one noes anything about it, let me know. thanks

Maybe your car is scared to go that fast with you driving.

Actually it would be helpful to have a bit more info like:
Only during breaking?
At a constant speed?
As you accelerate past 40 -45?
You get the idea. More info is helpful for diagnostics.

+1 From the info there is about the problem, tho VERY vague, it sounds like an out of balanced tire or bent rim.

I suspect this, from the VERY best of E39 Links, will also apply to the E36:
- The main causes of vibration while highway driving (1) (2) (3) (4) (5); while highway braking (1) (2) (3); and while slow speed braking on bumps (1) & TireRack vehicle vibration diagnosis chart (1)
