Clicking noise when turning

Hi,

Just wondering if someone had any similar experience, with their car. My '03 X5 making a clicking noise when i turn. its coming from left driver side. I have replaced left boot and cv joints but still have the clanking noise. and someone told me it might be the shaft.

Does this sound right? also do you think its a DIY or should i just take it to a mechanic. wonder how much it would cost to replace half shaft.

Any replies appreciated. thanks

Hi, This may not be your problem as I have had the CV joint problem, which is very distinctive and is a rapid speed related clicking. However I also had a louder problem ONLY on full lock which turned out to be the front anti-roll bar bushes. Not the link rod bushes as these will make a noise when you hit a speed bump going straight but the ones that hold the anti-roll (sway) bar to the chassis. I was not convinced when told but the mechanic said he would not charge if this did not fix the problem! The parts are two bushes and labour less than an hour so I paid up as a very cheep cure.

I just experienced this. Left side Noise started when I was turning. I changed the hub and bearing, still clicked. I changed the control arms and ball joints. still clicked. I changed the half shaft (with both CV joints) Still clicked. Noise was progressively worse and started on any acceleration, not just turning. Now 5k miles later I can tell its actually from the transmission (possibly torque converter). I thought it was coming from the left wheel because thats how the sound travelled to my ear when I was Driving.

To test, step on the brake HARD and while in drive give it a heavy gas pedal. When I heard the clicking and the wheels werent moving, that told me it is unfortunately in the Trans.
