BMW 540i Stalling problem resolved

Hi All,

I had a stalling problem with my 2001 540i 6 speed where when I came to a stop the engine would sometimes stall. When stopping I noticed that the engine rpm's would drop to almost 0 and then shoot up to near 1000 rpm's before recovering to around 500 rpm's. More and more frequently the car would stall when coming to a stop or when turning into my driveway.

I was able to fix the problem by replacing all 4 O2 sensors, the MAF and installing a new air filter. I think the problem was actually the O2 sensors but I bought the VW MAF for $70 since the car has 90k miles on it.

The engine no longer stalls and rpm's drop nicely to 500 rpm without hunting up and down wildly as it did before.

I was getting 21.9 mpg before the fix and now I am getting 23.5 mpg.
Throttle response and power are greatly improved as well.

I bought the 4 Bosch O2 sensors from Amazon for $61 front's and $71 rear's each.
I got the VW MAF from AutohausAZ for $70

Mike

Did you swap the 02's one at a time then the MAF or did you do it as one shabang? Reason I am asking is if one was bad ...maybe you 'overkilled' it? or if the MAF was bad...maybe you spent $280 extra? But thanks for the post anyway,,,I'll def keep it in mind!

I did the job entirely without testing each part.
Since the O2's are recommended to be replaced at 100K I did them all.
Also the MAF was only $70 ( I went with the VW version ) so I did it just to be safe.

Also you need to let the computer learn all the new parts so changing them one at a time wasn't really feasible for me as I use jack stands and a floor jack to work on the car.

All '99 and up 540's use drive by wire M62tu engines and have a 5 pin MAF connector.
I've tried some VW MAF's in the past, didn't have good luck with them. I'm now using one from a Rover, which is 1/2 the cost of the BMW and the same part.

Replacing post catalyst O2 sensors is generally not needed unless you have a code for a bad one. The post catalyst O2 sensors have nothing to do with engine operation. All they do is monitor that the catalyst is functioning properly. I have never replaced the post catalyst O2 sensors on any car, and on my 2001 540, I now have 181k miles. Pre catalyst O2 sensor do effect engine operation, and people have found improved gas mileage and idle smoothness from preventive replacement, even before the engine starts throwing codes.

OP, did you have a "service engine soon" light? Did you attempt to scan and see either there were any "pending" codes stored?

Hi,
It has 5 pins. It was a cheap unit off ebay from the US. Here's the link:

I have no idea how long it will last, but it's been working for a couple of months.
