X3 Earned It's Stripes Today....

Just got back from Bob Taylor's House of Color a couple of days ago.

I had him lay the Motorsports colors on the side of the Alpine. Pretty sweet on a white vehicle.

What do you guys think?

Think you may want him to go over his work. Looks like some air bubbles forming already.

Or you can take a silicon/rubber type spackling tool and some soapy water and press them out. Otherwise this will come up in a couple of months.

It is neat to look at though.

Oh man that's funny. Lets see....pressing out a painted stripe with some soapy water?

He'll be at the Street Rod Nationals this year striping some very high dollar cars. Bob is one of the best in the nation. I assure you it's my poor photography that you see as an issue..

Ummm they don't look painted on. You can see a reflection from clear tape.

Yep, I'm sure your right.

Bob's been doing this for 40 years and he's just dying to ruin his reputation these days by stringing 3M pin stripe tape across his customer's cars.....

Wonder why he painfully detailed to me NOT to wash the car for a week or so while the paint dried. And not to wax it for at least a couple of weeks. That crook!

Wonder how he matched the M colors so perfectly? Guess those rolls come in ALL kinds of colors and he stocks them all...

He and I are gonna have words!!

Well then your photography sucks..My guess is he may have a clear tape coating over the paint job, which is not uncommon either untill the paint has cured.

Worked in a body shop from the age 13 until I was 17 and one of the things I did was pin stripe.

Sorry Bob is not so famous as to be heard of out here on the East coast. And since the picture appears to have bubbling tape it was a friendly suggestion.

At first glance I don't like the idea of pin stripes running down the side of the X3. Hmmm, can you post some more pics, perhaps showing entire car, and in the light?

Stripes look fantastic. My husband had hand painted stripes put on his 1971 R75/5 - love the quality and uniqueness of an artist at work. Think they would look good on black too.

But then again, the whole idea of an "M"-ish X3 doesn't suite me.

I don't like it, but thats just me. It's your car, if it makes you happy, go with it.

C'mon seriously. You can't see what appears to be clear tape lifting right under the shot of the side mirror? I know my eyes aren't what they used to be, but it really looks like clear tape over the painted stripes.

We used to do this after 24 hours to make sure the paint cured all the way without being chipped.

I like the idea, but thought the tape was lifting and was trying to be helpful...sheesh

IMHO, it's close to having neon lights under the bumpers. No-no

My Integra came with pin-stripes from the factory. Took them right off as soon as i brought the car home.

I think it's a neat idea...for a 1 series etc. Just doesn't seem to be right on an E83, but the colors are nice. I was lucky that they painted mine on my Sky Redline with something cheap (wait, you're surprised the GM dealer used something cheap?!) that I could easily delete with Goof Off and elbow grease. I made sure they didn't charge me for the stripes I didn't want...

yeah, i saw what you describe but interpreted it as a reflection. i was simply giving you the business because you seemed determined to justify your comments, and it all seemed kind of funny - to me. no disrespect intended, and like everyone else who participates in this forum i have learned quite a bit from reading your posts.
