Front Suspension issues

2005 X3 3.0L 96kmi

I am starting to have some issues with my front suspension. In my 96k of hard miles, I have starting feeling the pain of substantial wear.

Currently, I have new Struts, springs and strut mounts (upper guides). However, there is noticeable play in the front end, and a new light clunk as I go over small bumps. I am thinking my next course of action is to replace the tension struts. Without much trouble, I can use a screwdriver to move that inner rubber bushing around almost an inch. I dont see any contact marks in the paint on the end of the tension strut, but I have a feeling this is where the clunking is coming from.

Has anyone replaced their tension struts yet? If so, what were the indicators that they needed replacement? Also has anyone replaced the ball joints? I have not seen much info in the forum on either topic.

BTW, I checked the sway bar links and tie rod ends today and they seem great.
