Probably a really dumb question about noise and engine choice...

Please excuse what may be a stupid question, but which 2011 X3 engine choice would result in a quieter ride, the 28i or 35i? Presumably one would hear the sound of the turbo, but by having the turbo, might the engine rev less? Does the answer differ if you compare spirited driving to highway cruising?

There is no such thing as a stupid question. Hard to answer yours though because so many variables are involved with "noise". Tires, pavement surface, weather, speed, all play a part in "noise". At full throttle (or "full cry" as the gonzo auto hacks like to write) the bigger engine will probably be louder. Under normal conditions you probably would be hard pressed to tell the difference in sound unless there was a "sport" muffler involved. Try them both out and see which you like under the conditions you drive.

Thanks for the reply. I'd like to drive the 35i, but unfortunately, neither of my two closest dealers have one at the moment.

Quieter Ride

I participated in the "X3 Difference" event last week, where we could test the X3 against the MB GLK, Audi Q5 2.0, Lexus RX 350. They had both 28i and 35i models available, and the 35i was actually the quieter of the two X3s. Perhaps the 35i gets more sound insulation or something, but it was much more comfortable sound-wise. The X3 rode and drove better than any of the competitors, but the Q5 "appeared" to be the most premium of all due to interior and exterior design. I still prefer the X3 however.

Remember that the 28i will switch from I-6 to I-4 turbo for the 2012 models, like many other BMWs as the N52 engine is phased out in favor of the N20.

Thanks, 5151. Could you comment more on the difference between the ride of the 28i and 35i? I've read the other posts on here, but curious on your take since you just recently drove them both (and I cant where I'm located).

The only difference between the two is the engine. The ride and everything else are the same. My 35i has a nice throaty exhaust note, but it's not loud or intrusive. I imagine the 28i would sound very similar, but I don't remember. Any difference though would be negligible.

I was not babysit both cars during test drive and I feel like 35 is more load when you press gas pedal to the floor

Not much difference in the ride quality. Both cars had the adaptive dampers, and when in the Normal mode, they pretty much felt the same. The 28i just didn't sound as good, a bit noisier. I had previously driven a 35i with the 19" wheels, and the ride was slightly less compliant due to the lower profile tires. I think the ride quality of the F25 is really pretty good, actually better than expected.

If you really want/need a softer ride, suggest you go for the Lexus RX. Basically a tall Camry. If you want a decent ride quality with handling and performance, go for either of the X3 models. Like comparing a 3 series and a Camry.

By the way, I will have a 35i in a couple of days.

Thanks for the input, everyone. By "ride" I didn't mean comfort, but how much differently the 35i drove compared to the 28i. I'm coming off a a 328xi wagon lease and I plan to get a X3. Unfortunately, my two closest BMW dealers only have the 28i for me to test.

You must try both.
