Getting a fair price on a 2011 528i

This is going to be my first BMW and I am having a hard time getting a feel for a good price. Not looking to squeze every last penny but also don't want to pay more than I have to. I went to the american express car buying website and they seem to have a good tool but I'd like to hear from others if that is what they paid - or if they have any free advice The Amex price is supposed to be a firm price.

2011 528i

INVOICE MSRP YOUR PRICE
Base $42,520 $45,925 $41,268
Cold Weath. Pkg $ 955 $ 1,050
iPod & USB Adp $ 365 $ 400
Premium Pkg $ 1,640 $ 1,800
Rear view camera $ 365 $ 400
Smartphone intg. $ 135 $ 150
Auto Transmission $ 475 $ 500
Metallic paint $ 550 $ 550
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTALS
Options $ 5,120 $ 5,600 $5,120
Incentives $0 $0 $0
================================================== ===
TOTAL $47,640 $51,525 $46,388

Savings off MSRP: $5,137

I am also very confused on the whole European Deliver option. It is supposed to be a 5-10% discount (depending where you look) off of European Invoice (which i can't seem to find, must be looking for the wrong term). For $1 or $2,000 off the ED is not worth it to me as I am really only looking for a good price. Would be fun to go to Germany but not my primary reason.

Anyone have suggestions on what a good 528i price is?

Thanks!

I just got my first BMW, also a 2011 528i. I paid 41,840 for base model with Automatic Transmission and metallic paint.

Anything close to invoice is a good price. Since the Amex pricing seems to be $1,300 BELOW invoice, that's a pretty smokin' deal!

Go to BMWUSA, Select European Delivery under the "Experience" tab.
You will see for 528i, MSRP is $45050 (+875 delivery) and ED MSRP is $41945 (+875). Better?

Also, use BMW's Build-Your-Own to get MSRP and then search MY posts to find the formula to determine a good Invoice+Profit price.

You are dong the right thing ..... I hate how many times I walked into a BMW dealer "unarmed" with the information available from this board.

Since you are ballparking ED prices, think you could do 11% maybe 12% off US MSRP is the simple way to look at it.

Your AMEX deal example looks quite good, if you can achieve that, certainly not over paying!

I agree that anything below invoice falls into the great deal category... consider on the Euro Delivery ... ED MSRP is 7% off US MSRP (but not on options), but most deals are based on ED invoice, so you end up with $3000-4,000 to play with between the US and ED price. If you are crazy about price only, you could fly to Munich ($1000), take delivery, drive the car to the airport and drop it off for shipping, and get back on the plane. You'd be thousands ahead.

I am very skeptical you're going to be able to order the car for U.S. or ED below invoice in the Boston area. Watch out for the back end charges.

What exactly does that mean? Something like the "Automatic Transmission" charge listed above? (AT is standard on the 528i in the US; $500 is the MSRP for Sport Auto, but as I recall it's available only with) the ZSP, which isn't on the list.)

If you can find a local dealer who will sell you the car for $500 ABOVE invoice, you're doing great. The Amex deal frankly sounds "too good to be true."

Remember that there are lots of other ways dealers make money - bending you over on your trade-in, originating the loan or the lease, marking up the acquisition fee and document fees, selling you high-margin add-ons like wheel and tire warranties, Teflon "Paint Protection" LoJack and other items of dubious value. You may think you have a smoking purchase price, but still leave thousands on the table.

Regarding ED: The real home run comes if you lease. The price you pay for the car is based on the ED invoice, which is +/- 7% lower than the invoice for Domestic Delivery. (This is the base price; the invoice for options is the same for ED as domestic). However, the residual value is based on the domestic MSRP, not the lower ED value. And when you combine ED pricing ("cap cost") with domestic residual, the leases get very, very attractive. But bear in mind that leasing is a black art, with lots of ways for the dealers to fleece an uneducated customer. If you are interested in leasing, do your homework. There are plenty of great threads int he Ask-a-Dealer forum to get you started.

I checked out AMX on the 528 that we are planning on and it was higher than the CA that I have been working with.

Just found truecar.com. Their price is $250 over invoice with certain dealers. Has anyone ever used them?
