112,500 on the 06 530xi and runs great; good enough that my son and I are going to take a father and son road trip to Seattle at the end of this week. He just graduated and is going to his first job with Amazon.

I'm more interested in hearing how E60 compares to E39 in terms of reliability. It seems E60 mechanically has held up pretty well, sans the ones with twin turbos...

04 530i with 110,000 miles and running great. Mechanically, the engine is running perfect but I need to get some of the bushings replaced to tighten it up. But that's any 100K mile car.

TMQ... since I have both and the E39 (1997 528i) has just over 200,00 and the E60 (06 530xi) has 112,500 I think I'm in a good position to answer your question. I have my own shop and do my own maintenance for my cars and teach DE and advanced DE for Porsche therefore know a little about these cars. When I look at my maintenance records the E39 is less expensive to operate; longer brake pad and rotor life, fewer parts wear out and break, better tire wear, over all more reliable. The E60 is a dream on the open road with all seat, ventilation, entertainment stuff and very smooth ride but lacking in power and handles like a pig. The E39 is not quite as smooth on the open road but the road handling/feel is better and much more fun to drive. The E60 with half the miles of the E38 has had the AC radiator punctured due to no protection through the front grill, water pump failed @ 70,000, panorama moon roof leaked (a known BWM problem) and shorted out $1500. worth of computer chips in the rear wheel well (BMW did not cover this), navigation CD failed and little stuff seems to go wrong all the time. Even with my computer there are many portions of the E60 "brain" I can't access and must go to the BMW dealer for diagnostics and resetting. I like the E60 but all the gadgets, I Drive and stuff make me crazy. The result is I'm giving the E60 to my son and keeping the E39 which I'm putting in the shop for a cosmetic and mechanical refresh; I'm guessing I'll have another 150,000 - 200,000 miles of worry free enjoyable driving. I hope that answers your question.

Electronics woes are not avoidable in these cars, and that's one part that certainly brings up the cost. Did your navigation hardware go bad or was it just the CD? Quote:
Thanks.

Both are automatic trans. with STEP in the 06, moon roof and panoramic moon roof, heated seats & wheels, all leather, xenons, nav, basically all the bells and whistles. Upgraded Michelin Pilot Sport tires for summer and Blizzack's for winter. Oil changes Mobile 1 extended performance every 8-9,000 with filter change; rotate tires every oil change, Mobile 1 ATF & differential fluid every 50,000, new brake & power steering fluid every 2 years, radiator coolant with wetter water every 2 years, plugs 50,000, cabin filters every year, air cleaner filter 25,000, wiper blades every year in the fall, white lithium greats on all hinges every year. Jump on Bavarian Parts and they have a full maintenance profile for all Bimmers, kind of over done so they sell a lot of parts but none the less very complete. Generally 3 times a year I buy all the parts & fluids and just spend a full day going through the cars. Preventative maintenance is always cheaper than a break down.

George,
That's very impressive. I also have Mike Miller's old school maintenance schedule, just not so sure how old school I want to be. On auto tranny fluid - I head that BMW's special formulated ATF is needed, so I assume that with Mobile 1 you still got good results?

BMW trans. fluid, what a rip off! To make a long story short, the BMW Steptronic trans. is actually a GM truck (that's right) designed transmission and because it "locks up" in 6th gear an ATF with more detergent was needed, so GM wrote a new spec. which resulted in Dexon VI. Now BMW, Rover, Jag, Audi and others buy this trans. from GM and ZF who license the design. Of course the marketing guys step in and say "wow a new trans. so we will have a special ATF". All said and done after much research and talking to a couple of friends and engineers at GM and ZF I come to find that Dexon VI or Mobile 1 ATF is in fact BMW "special" ATF at $6.95 per quart retail...now ask your BMW dealer how much they want per quart for their OEM BMW ATF. I don't begrudge BMW from making a profit but this kind of crap really irks me.

1995 530i with 132,500. Running great! Everything working! Funny how iceman2011 brought up knock on wood because when I'm in my car with someone and something comes up about a feature of the vehicle I say yah it's working great (knock on wood) and when I say knock on wood I actually knock on the wood in my car lol
