Buzz under the hood while car is off

I am looking at buying a 2003 530i, and while looking under the hood (before taking it for a spin) there was a faint buzzing noise under the hood. The sales guy said it is the power running the computer, which is always running. I find it hard to believe that is possible without burning out the battery regularly.

Does anyone know if this buzz, and if it is normal?

Not sure about the 2003, but my 2008 e60 "wakes up" as soon as I unlock the door, or open any door - even before inserting the key to start up. Normally about 15 minutes after shutdown, if no further interaction with the vehicle, the systems go to sleep and the battery drain then is only a few milliamps... supposedly not enough to drain the battery quickly.

I hear the same faint buzzing in mine as well. I think you'll find that after the 15 minute sleep delay, all noises will stop (if everything is working as it should).

I too wonder what components are being discharged? Also, what is the buzz after you immediately shut the doors?

Fuel pump charging the system. If you're cleaning your car, opening and closing the hood, trunk and doors, the fuel pump will run nearly constantly until you close everything up. Since I make a lot of short trips and it's tough keeping the battery up, I just gave up and connect a 6 amp charger to the car when I'm vacuuming it out. Ridiculous but there it is.
