Question '98 Automatic Z3 won't reverse

Hi All,

Recently purchased the vehicle. This morning I backed out of my garage fine. I went to the bank and pulled into a parking space, when I was done I hopped back in, released my hand brake (emergency brake) put it in reverse and nothing happened, I even gave it some gas and still no luck. Had to end up going in neutral and letting someone give me a push out of the space. Any ideas on what's wrong? Any help would be great.

Thanks

Does it still do it? Try moving the gear selector back and forth (wiggle it) a little and see if it drops into reverse. If it's a bad range selector, it might need to be cleaned. With your foot on the brake, it's very evident when the car goes into reverse gear, so no need to apply gas (it's either going into gear or it's not).

Thanks for your help, yes it's still doing it, not going into gear like you said. I have to get this checked out.

Same transmission as in your Z3. There is no dipstick, just a drain hole and a fill hole in the pan.

I will never understand why people don't change their transmission fluid regularly.

This BMW lifetime fluid stuff is the most asinine thing I have ever heard of.

The official "lifetime" fluid means it lasts the lifetime of the transmission. If the transmission blows at 51k miles, then thats the "lifetime" of the transmission.

Its completely insane, and BMW royally ****ing their customers.
