One week with my 2011 535xi- Now I need a radar detector

Absolutely love this car. Just got out of a 2008 335xi and the difference is amazing. No regrets.
Now what do folks on this board prefer for radar detection? I'm leaning toward the Valentine 1.

I have the 9500 passport.
Saved my ass last Sunday.

Not trying to hijack the topic, but has any of you guy been busted on speeds of 100 mph or higher?

Call me lucky. I've never been pulled over for speeding. I think this new car is really going to draw some attention.

What made you go with the 9500?

+1 on passport. the downloadable (and preloaded) cameras and speedtraps built into the GPS are worth the price of admission. Valentine is long in the tooth. passport with no regrets.

re: +100mph. no i have not, but i am currently in process on a 85 in a 40 (who knew the FDR was 40mph???) which can not be pled down. anything 39mph + is reckless driving and is at least 11 points (if found guilty). my guess is +100mph means larger fine/points if the cop is in a good mood, and impounding and maybe a night in jail if he is not

V1 owner here, if u wanna not get a ticket get the v1 all others are just toys, its funny seeing the people ahead of u braking cause there toy of a radar detector just picked up the radar, best of the best will save u tons and tons of money, imo the best thing I've ever bought for my car. I'm considering getting a 2nd, also get the case , and get a 2nd mount

In my case I got the passport one after a lot of research and reviews. In YouTube you can find comparison between brands and live tests.

Having a 400 hp car and not being able to go above 100 mph is frustrating.

problem with valentine is that its technology is old and doesnt have gps, speed cameras and red light cameras are preloaded and can be updated. it also has laser detector which basically tells you you're about to be pulled over. as more police depts go to laser, it makes the valentine even more obsolete.

total protection would be passport + a laser shifter.

My V1 has had at least a 10,000% ROI. YMMV.

I have an 535 ix on order. Yes. I have been busted at over 100 miles. 5 years ago in my infiniti I35. It was 1 am in the morning. I thought I was racing another car, unknown to me it was a police sports car, so I floored it, and hit over 120 in seconds. Then I saw the blue/red lights , I'm like oh sh$t! He said he paced me at over 120 miles, so he wrote 120 on the ticket. Of course, I had a radar detector. But it's was useless the police radar was off.

I will tell you, the I35 is a freaking fast car. I believe it has 255 HP. I can't even imagine how fast the 535 or 550 will be.

Once I went all the way to 140mph in the S4, if I cop had cought me that day, he probably woulda shot me in the spot. :S
Now I am riding @ 80 mph most of the time, and some times will go a little above that when I am absolutely sure there is no one around.

About the radar detector, I heard good things about the V1 too, and as highyo said, the factor that made me choose the 9500xi was the GPS that allows fixed radars/redlight camera detection.

Yeah! My ticket was $500. Actually anything above 20 over the speed limit is $500.

V1 has laser as well, and it works.

The arrows and the counter trump speed camera warnings, IMO. But then again, I've used a V1 for 12 years.

Problem is in VA, they're illegal, which sucks...

I have both V1 and 9500xi. The V1 is more sensitive and I love the arrows.
The big advantage of 9500ix is the red-light camera stuff.

You can't go wrong with either. For the pure radar detection go V1. That's my opinion.

For those in states where they have radar detector detectors (i.e. spectre) the STI driver or Passport redline are the only options

Both the V1 and 9500IX are great detectors. I have both. If you go V1 and do a lot of highway driving, check with your state to see if they use highway sensors (TSR) to monitor traffic. I'm in Ohio and my V1 is sitting in a closet because these sensors use K band and the V1 will false every mile or two. Makes it unusable. The 9500IX updated their programming to add an option to filter TSR. I've been contacting Valintine for the last six months and they keep on telling me they are working on it. Nothing has happened and they are an Ohio company!

V1 is the real thing, all others are imitations - I own three V1s that have kept me ticket free for years.

That's quite cheap for a Californian.. a friend was caught driving at 88 at a 65mph highway.. his ticket was $780 + court!

I have had the Passport for over 5 years and not one ticket, without it 2 tickets!
The new Passport doubles as a GPS and the Cops can't tell the difference!
