All settings lost after a few days? WTF?

Why do all my radio presets AND the 8 customized presets on the dash go away after the car sits for 48 hrs?

The first time they were lost I thought it was user error, fat finger, my goof...but now after reprogramming all the stations and all 8 presets they're gone...AGAIN!

Hmm -- any chance you used the 2nd key fob which was set for other settings?

FWIW, my car has sat for 3 and 4 days at a time and I haven't lost my settings.

You may have a draw on your battery that leaves just enough to start the car, but wipes out all stored settings. This happened a few times on my e60. (Come on, admit it, did you use the other key fob?)

I am a one fob guy, and no one else drives the car. What is the procedure to transfer the settings to the other key?

It's gotta have something to do with the "profiles" settings on the idrive. The manual is moot on the subject

Use key with settings on it to start ignition.
Export profile to USB key.
Start ignition with other key.
Import profile from USB key.

It's actually fairly straight forward.

Thanks UK, how in the world do people learn these cars adequately without help from the Fest? Sorry for the hi-jack, but it was related to the question posted?

Perhaps reading the manual?

True, but you must admit the manual fails, in many areas, to provide adequate explanation.

Hey decaf I have RTFM many times AND read it again regarding transferring settings, and guess what, it does not say squat specifically in the above case. there are lots of esoteric functions of this car that many of us want to know and the manual just doesn't cover. I cannot imagine the technology challenged handling the advanced functions very well. I cannot imagine how much time it takes the CA to orient people to these cars and the number of follow up phone calls they get. My point was that forums are a great place to get acquainted with the esoterica, without some smart @$$ saying RTFM. But I did note your wink, so no offense taken.

The same thing happened to me during the first two weeks I had my new F10 2011 550 M-sport, and then it never happened again. I have now parked my car for 48 and 72 hours several times, with no problem with vanishing pre-sets. I told the dealer about this but they did not have any explanation.

I personally think the new 535i owners manual is very much improved over previous manuals, although I found them good as well. There are many "The Concept" areas which explain the feature or function in a summary fashion to further inform the owner. What features were you not able to find answers for in the manual?

The other person pointed out the specific instructions are on pages 33-34. What features can you not find adequate explanation for in the manual?

I did find that and yes it did cover it, but unless you already had the issue come up the manual was not very intuitive in terms of things one needs to do to set up the keys. But in general the manual is adequate. I like having it on my iPad.

Along those lines, while waiting for delivery I've been reading the pdf manual and posed the question of what happens when you have two different keys in the car at the same time to my CA. Still waiting for an answer. Will it happen often no, but there will be times when the spouse has her key with her and is passenger, so which key takes priority and how can they be distinguished or will they become a mish mash of jumbled or worse corrupted to the point of not worling?

I'll answer this from experience. The car gets confused at times, whichever key opens the car will take precedence, but if you both approach the car at a similar time it can get confused...this has happened to us a couple of times.

"Confused" meaning that the car chooses the key that the passenger has instead of that of the driver?

Your answer to keeping the settings.

Fixing the basic problem haven't seen any solutions as to why it happens and what really fixes it.

RE: my earlier post on multiple keys, the dealer never did come up with an answer. But the manual did say that the key that unlocks the car is "supposed" to take precedence and then it went on to say in effect; if in doubt then hold key to right side of steering column in designated area and press the start button. This all sounds good for those of us with the standard key but those with the convenience package if both touch the door handles at the same time, hmmm Perhaps then the steering column trick to sort it out.
