Question Tire, Wheel, Dent and Windshield Insurance

Today I inquired about wheel, tire, ding, dent and windshield insurance for my 550i to be delivered next week. I plan on a 3 year lease. I was quoted $1989 for the 3 year term. Is this a reasonable price? Any room to negotiate with the dealer for a lower the price?
Thanks in advance,
DocBob

Doc,

That sounds waaaay high. Is this the BMW AG package or a private aftermarket option? Maybe the added coverage of windshield/dent insurance is driving-up the premium.
My dealership was about $800 below your quote for a 5-year comprehensive plan (tire/wheel only). I'd ask the dealership to itemize the plan for you...
Good luck,
jc

I would say skip the dings and dents. Most mobile PDRs charge between $75 to $100 per dent.

+1, also why bother with windshield coverage? That is covered by most insurance cos. As a non chargeable item under comp coverage. Heck my ins. Co. Doesn't even charge a deductible for glass coverage. The quote otherwise seems very high. These are adjusted by geography though so that may be playing a role. I was quoted $750 for tire and wheel alone at lease inception.

I'd say skip this all together. The odds that you'll have to replace the tires anyway due to wear are pretty high. (as you know you can't return a car with bald tires). Any minor dents and dings are allowed on a lease under wear and tear provisions. Plus any rim you scratch or other minor cosmetic damage can be fixed for a lot less than 2 grand, assuming you'll need it at all.

He might get away with original tires if he is using a set of winter tires for half the year.

Thoughts / Plan..

I had W & T insurance on all the recent cars I have had here in Chicago(terrible roads/potholes/ decreased budget) and have used it and needed it several times. Repairing a rim, replacing a 19" or 20" tire is very expensive i.e over $500 the one time I didn't have it. I only thought about ding and dent because I am a perfectionist and can't stand the thought of looking at a a small ding/ dent in my brand new 550i from some moron flipping their pickup truck / SUV / minivan door into mine in a parking structure/lot. It's more for my peace of mind so to speak. I also hate having to always park so far away from other cars only to find someone who parks their car next to mine (assuming with a nice car I'll never ding their's). I never thought about windshield coverage until several recent posters on the forum brought up problems with frequent and not uncommon road chips and WS damage on their 550i's and questioned the car's design vs soft glass. I am going to check with my auto insurance in the am on coverage for the WS.
I'll let you know and maybe haggle a bit. All in all, I am really looking forward to this car and want to enjoy it without worry. I have also learned not lose too much sleep over a few $$ spent that make me / my family happy/safe and that over the course of my lifetime won't make much of a difference to me anyway(and no, I am not independently wealthy). I know for some it's about the "deal". For me, it's more about getting the best car for me and knowing/believing that I have been treated honestly and fairly.
My dealership, Elmhurst BMW, has been great and has bent over backwards to help me get me into this car ASAP- especially considering my medical situation.

My dealer highly recommended the full coverage package - wheels, tires, interior, scratches, everything - and came in at $1000. Same as the security deposit so I swapped my security for the insurance and now know that at end of the day I can walk away without any unforeseen costs at end of my lease. Given that I have 19" RFT and what I have read here about the Goodyears I think it a wise decision.

Question Was it through BMW?

My package was through BMW. Was your's through a different company?
BTW, how do you swap a security deposit?
Thanks,
DocBob

Yes my insurance is through BMW. I swapped out the security deposit because it's not necessary to provide dealer if you have a policy that covers and issues upon return of the vehicle. Making sense? Basically I have given them $1k. If I have no issues over the term or with my return I am at a loss. If I have bad tires or interior or body damage they accept it regardless. I consider it a safer bet given my Oyster leather and crowded office parking lot.
