brand new to BMW (ive owned vw/audi mostly) and I have numerous electrical issues (which im used to) that being said. its a manual and the fluid is BLACK and what ive read is to not change the fluid cause it destroys the trans. Im not sure if that true or not. the car has 270k on it and other than minor electrical issues like windows and a head light out it seems to be running strong. any advice to keep this running for another 100K? I feel like I got a good deal for 1200 and have hook ups on parts and what not, pretty much, whats are the defects mechanically and what should be the main thing to look for with engine issue?

That depends on you sir, what ever you feel you want to do to your E34 feel free, we may not like it, but in the end it is your car. Every now and then we can give hints of things to buy, from where, and when to do certain things to prevent major disasters.
This all depends on the depth of your wallet as well when deciding what to do to your ride.
We have E34's from bone stock, BMR_LVR, to drag car in the making, imae34driver. And everything in between.
And they all have a personality and most all look good they way they are, or once the intention is explained even the more, ugly cars look good.

Of course a few things could be entirely specific to the E34 - i don't have that much experience with any other vehicle to say otherwise.

The post will serve as a useful reminder, will at least alert people to the demands of owning an older vehicle, and will be checklisted for easy reference. At least i hope it turns out that way. And with such an extensive buildup, I'm sure it will be a disappointment.
Would be greatly appreciated, just bought a 1989 535i ... tia

1. turn the key to start position (do not start car)
2. press the gas pedal to the floor and release 5 times
3. the check engine light should go out then begin to flash. The sequence of flashes is the code.( ie: 1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, pause, 2 flashes, pause, 2 flashes = 1222)
4. once you get the code repeat step 2 to retrieve the next code.
5. continue to repeat step 2 until 1444 or 1000 flashes. 1444 and 1000 means no codes or all codes clear

Just thought I'd add, my 95 540 does not respond to full release of the pedal. It responds to pressing and releasing the kick-down switch. IOW, pedal to floor up an inch, down, up, etc.... for the five times. Just wanted to put that out there too.

Early 90 and earlier do not have a bulb, but one can be added and the test performed.

Update on the stomp test. Probably been stated already. Actually I forgot about it. The stomp test is US market specific.
Most e34s overseas can not do it.

This conversation was held recently on my latest blog article.
It was something I learned years ago but have neglected to remember since it never pertained to me.
That said if you do have a e34 or any OBDI car marketed outside the US.
If you can perform the stomp test, please post up your model, build date and geographical location.
If possible also include the origin to which your car rolled out the factory.
I want to try and log all the cars across the pond which are able to do it. (e32, e39, e38, and e36s as well if you got one)
The guess is that it's less than 20% of the overseas market were able to do stomp tests.

Need to buy one that is simmilar to this one that is in line, not - in tank. Mby some suggestions on this one too? Now looking on Mercedes w140 5.0 or 6.0 engine fuel pumps..
