Question 2001 330ci Engine Temperature Problems

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem I am going through currently with my 330ci.

When I'm stuck in traffic or moving stop and go at slower speeds, my engine temperature beings to climb. The needle never hits the red light for "max overheat" but it gets close. I am able to get it back to normal temp by turning on the heat to 91!! It is very unpleasant down here with the tropical heat in Hawaii.

Additionally, when I'm driving at higher speeds on the highway, I do not have any problems like this. Everything is 100% normal.

Any idea on what is going wrong with my car?

Thank you!

Is the coolant low? What have you checked?

After confirming your coolant level is correct:
Does your electric fan turn on? It should spin for a few seconds when you start the car as a test of the motor.
Check to see that the motor spins manually (car off).

Disconnect the wire from temp sensor in the lower radiator hose, then start the engine. If the fan runs with the sensor disconnected, you probably have a bad sensor or wiring, a replacement sensor is about $25-30.
