my windows stopped working - 1988 535i - any suggestions?

Check fuse #6, the power window relay (on the relay panel, under the dash, near the hood release lever), or the power window circuit breaker.

The breaker is near your right knee when you sitting in the seat. Most likely you pushed it in and the windows stopped working. Do not feel bad this tends to happen to knew owners.
