How do I re-key the ignition switch?

1991 318is.

I got the cylinder out of the ignition switch and took it to my locksmith, but they couldn't figure out how to remove the tumbler portion out of the cylinder.

Anybody know how to seperate the two so I can have one key?

BTW. Called the dealer and he didn't know anyone who could do it or get a keyed cylinder. Said I need to change ALL the door/trunk locks to match the ignition...

send your key and tumbler to a BMW shop that knows how to do it. If it was me I wouldn't waste the time learning how to do it because it is probably more headache than it's worth. Just my opinion.

Called the dealer back and asked if they could get me an ignition switch with a key to match the car doors if I showed proof of ownership. The guy said yes, but it's the same guy I talked to earlier. I'll goo by tomorrow and see what happens.

as long as you have a title and registration then they should cut keys or match a switch.

Went to the dealer and was able to order a new cylinder and key based on the VIN. Should be here tomnorrow or the next day.

On a side note, I aksed them about trans and diff fluid. After 20 minutes, the parts guy said Dextron lll (?) for the trans and some Catrol vwx-yz oil I've never heard of. It was just five letter with no numbers weight, etc.

they go off what bmw recommends. as of your choices, i ran redline mtl for tranny and both valvoline snythetic 75w-90 and reline 75w-90 for diff

^^^^ Thanks.

I picked up some Castrol Synthetic 75W-90 on my way home yesterday. I'll use that until I find what I really want.

Update:

Got a new cylinder ($55) and key ($27) from the dealer to match my VIN. Before I left, I checked both. The key didn't work on the new cylinder or any of the doors, but my door key worked great. I took the key back and got my money back ($32 with tax for a single key and no plastic head @#$%^%*&!!!).

On a side note, the parts guys said that after 10 requests for a new key, BMW will not make the same key. It will have to be keyed differently. And I thought Porsche was anal...

/no they just make 10 keys per car. Seems fine to me, I mean have there really been over 10 trips to the dealer to order a key for your car? Seems like a lot....

FYI: SOME ACE Hardware stores can cut the 'laser cut" (actually milled)double-sided E30 and E36 BMW keys, and have the blanks. They even have chipped keys. The ACE locations that can perform this service are limited. Of course, it won't do you any good if you don't have a key to duplicate, but that could get you around the 10 key limit if it ever came to that.

No doubt other keys can be mode at other locations. It's just that the dealer won't provide the keys/ignition after 10 requests (or so I was told).

@Zoff: Isn't going to the lock smith defeat the purpose of getting a rekey kit and this forum's diy efforts?

The keys from the dealer never work unless you file them a little ,you make them hard cut them or they won't work your car is 22yrs old and I'm guessing you drive it so you locks are worn the vin keys are cut for brand new locks that's why it sometimes will work one but not all of them.So I'm a little cunfuzzed what do you have now ,you returned the new key and cylinder .yes? or just the key?Oh and you want anal dealers Tisher near me is a BMW ,Porsche & Audi dealer .
