X5 M Sport chipping issue: Is it a 20in wheel thing???

I would really appreciate you feedback on this, as I've been trying to figure why some M Sports seem to suffer bad stone chipping whereas others seem to have no such problem at all.

I got talking to a guy at a dinner last night who turned out has an X5 35d M sport, with the 19in wheels. I asked, and apparently no stone chipping problem (he later wheel span off in his 997 Carrera S so don't think driving style would explain it!). I have received a comment elsewhere from someone with a black 30d M Sport that he hasn't had a problem with stone chipping, who as it happens also has 19in wheels. I have also done a quick look at some forum members who have said they suffer from bad chipping round the rear wheel arches and this time the 20in wheels seem to be a common thread.

Could be coincidence, but perhaps the added width is enough to send stones down the side of the car rather than underneath?

Is this consistent with members' experience - i.e. do all M Sports with 20 in wheels suffer chipping and 19 in wheels get away with limited chipping?? Really appreciate your feedback!

Many thanks in advance for any comments!

Kief - many thanks - really appreciated!! I did read that post a while back but couldn't figure why some seemed to be affected and others not - have tagged my query on the end of it! Once again many thanks!

No expert here but I think the perfect storm for chips are the 20 " wheels and NO running boards to block the road rash from hitting the front panel on the rear wheels, just my two cents.

affinding - thank you so much for your reply - really appreciated !! I had hoped that the situation with chipping did not apply to cars with the 19in wheels (as my order has), but guess I was wrong. Just wanted to check before blowing $1000 on getting the 3M fitted, but can see I will need to. Will try and get fitted before I collect. Once again, many thanks.

Mein Auto: x5 5.0 m series 2011
I have the same problem on my 2011 black x5 M series . I did have the film installed right after taking delivery of the car and also changed out the 20 inch wheels to the 19 inch for winter driving. Unfortunately, the sand/gravel hits the flared front panel on the rear wheels at such velocity that it actually imbedded into the film (and yes, this is the 3M high end stuff) and it will have to be replaced this spring. I just found out that I cannot put running boards on since it is an M series. Anyone know of any aftermarket running boards that will look good and fit? I am hoping that running boards would solve some of this problem. Thanks!

Mine now has 27,500 kms, has passed through it's second winter (first with me) and I can't find any stone chips.

I did note while checking that the 3M has slightly lifted on the Left side rear wheel arch to rocker panel area, and has a very small piece that has discoloured.
I might, if bothers me too much get that area re-done.

obviously, 20 inch wheels make this issue worse than 19 inch, but the car looks better on 20 inch.
softer compound tyres will kick up more stones than harder compounds.
and if you go for 21 inch wheels your car wil look even better, but that extra 5mm on the outer side (21s have 285 wide, & 325 wide respectively) will chip up even more.

My main regeret having 20 inch wheels is the hard ride on Run Flats, but when i put my summers back on, I'm going for conventional tyres, not run flats, and they're cheaper so !!!!
