X6 E71 / E72 (2008 - 2014)
The BMW X6 luxury crossover went on sale in April 2008 as a 2009 model year. BMW referes to the X6 as a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) as it combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, xDrive and all-weather ability) with the stance, styling and roof line shape of a coupe. The E71 X6 was built off the E70 X5 (2007 - 2013) platform at BMW's Spartanburg, SC plant. Total worldwide sales were just over 235,000, sold mostly to the BRIC countries. US total sales was 34,082 vehicles.

Smile New X6 order tomorrow....still undecided on options!!!

I am placing my order for a 2012 X6 50i tomorrow:

Titanium Silver (or black?)+ Chateau Interior
Brushed Aluminum or Dark wood trim (again undecided)
Sports Package
20 inch wheels (I will replace the summer RFT's with Conti all seasons)
Running boards
Premium Sound
Heads up display
Privacy Glass
Heated seats (comfort or sport?)
Bench back seat (new this year and it seats 3)
...assorted other options

Aside from the color scheme which I am still perseverating over, can anyone make useful suggestions? Are there options that you feel are absolutely necessary or useless? Specifically, would you recommend the sport seats or the "multi contour seats? My 328 has sport seats, but I think that the others might be more comfortable.

The dealer also told me that they have a wheel and tire protection plan that will cover the non-RFT's with the 20" wheels. Do I need it? The roads are not great around here.

I forgot to mention:
Since I am ordering 20" all-season Continental DWS tires for the new car, I asked the dealer to buy back the summer RFT's. The dealership said no, but someone on site is intersted in buying them for "his wifes X5".

How much should I ask for a brand new set of 20" RFT's (summer high performance)?

I highly recommend the multi-contour seats. If you search this board and a variety of others, you'll find that almost everyone who has them does not regret that choice.

On aluminum trim: Personally I'd stay away from it if you're picky about stuff looking good. Fingerprints show on it more than the woodgrains. Half the trim is aluminum already -- don't make me break out the dust cloth even more!

On running boards: from my own searches, people think that the RBs are for looks only. They don't seem to be too functional. In fact, they seem to be quite disfunctional in some instances since they can get the back of your pants dirty when you get out of the car. That being said, I'll probably get them myself because they look good...I didn't on my X5 because they were too much in the way, but not as much on the X6 (just a smidge lower to the ground).

If one of the 'assorted other options' doesn't include the back up camera, it really should.

Good luck on your new purchase!

Thanks.

Yes I will get the backup camera. I haven't had a fingerprint problem with the aluminum trim on my other car (black 328). I just wonder if aesthetically it would be too much on a silver car.

The running boards are a must for me....form rather than function

I've never even sat in the multi-contours, so I can't give you a good comparison, but I will say that I'm perfectly satisfied with the Sport Seats. In fact, several first-time passengers have commented on how comfortable they are.

My order has been placed!

Titanium Silver, Chateau, and brushed aluminum trim. I decided that I didn't love the wood trim against the Chateau. Also, I think that the website does not depict the interior of the X6 well...not much space for trim in reality.

I sat in (and chose) the new "multi contour" seats. I agree that the sports seats are very comfortable, but these were incredible.

The car will build immediately, and may be here in 4 weeks!

I need to order my all seasons and figure out a price for the RFT's.

I will post pics upon arrival.

I looked up the price for a set of 20" summer RFTs at tirerack.com, and depending on the make they range between $1200 and $1900 before shipping. I have been offered substantially less for them. Can anyone suggest a forum to sell these? Craiglist?

I love your color combination. But, I'm biased - I selected the same... and I'm very, very happy with it.

I went with the dark bamboo wood which I really like. I have several pics of my X6 in the link in my signature below if you want a fix.

Here are a few pics of the bamboo trim with chateau

Actually after some more research...I'm keeping the summer tires. I will probably get a dedicated 18 or 19" snow tire/wheel set for the New England winter.

I'd recommend that route. A set up of wide 20's with all season (not winter) tires is a mediocre option for winter. You would get slightly better braking than the summer tire setup, certainly not significantly better.

Narrower winter tires allow more pounds per square inch where the tires contact the snow enabling better traction and braking. The rubber compound that winter tires are made of perform better in snow and at lower temperatures.

I bought a set of 19" (not staggered) from a 2010 X6 owner who had upgraded to 20" all seasons, but there weren't too many lightly used sets out there when I bought in November. You may have better luck in spring/summer. If you want BMW OE wheels, search Craigslist in an area with high X6 sales such as NYC/Northern NJ.

Also, if you consider X5 wheels, note that the X6 has different hub sizes for the font axle vs. the rear axle. The front wheels need a center bore of 74.0mm and rear 72.5mm. I believe E70 X5 whleels have a center bore of 74.0mm, but you should confirm that. You would need a spacer to use them on the rear of an X6. The wheel offset may be different also.

Good luck.

Also, be sure to post pictures when your pick up your X6

Thank you very much. This confirms what I have read elsewhere. I'm not sure if I'm gonna go with OE wheels...probably not.

I will definitely post pics! The dealer says the car may be ready in <4 weeks. Unfortunately, I don't think that my schedule will accommodate a trip to South Carolina. Thanks again.

Don't be afraid of putting winter rubber on your 20's either. There's no question that smaller tires are better, but I put the Pirelli Scorpion RFTs on my 20's for the winter and they were fantastic. We had 170"+ snow this year and I never once wanted for better traction. I'll probably be buying a set of reproduction wheels/TPMS to mount the summer tires on just so that I don't have to pay for the remounting twice a year.

Hi, I'm new here. Please tell me you ordered the adaptive drive! The multi contour seats are the way to go. You'll never go back. I have full black napa and brushed aluminum on my '10 50i. I love the looks of the brushed aluminum but even when you are very careful, it dings really easy. I also got the performance upgrade, it gives an additional 40 hp. I believe it is a dealer option now and not a factory option.

I have always purchased the tire insurance but never needed it. My brother, BW#4 B7, who is also a member here, has blown so many tires and rims on our NYC roads, it has more than paid for itself. If you have low profile tires, l would recommend it.

Good luck. You are going to LOVE the X6. It's a beast.

Yes, I got the adaptive drive. I also got the multicontour seats. I sat in the seats on the day I ordered....amazing. I have aluminum trim on my other car, and I hate the dings but love the look.

My dealer did not mention anything about a performance upgrade option. I probably wouldnt get it now, but might be interested down the line. How much does something like that cost (40 hp)? I have read about Dinan upgrades on this site that add around 100 hp, but admittedly know very little about them.

I ordered the low profile tires and the roads are awful in RI, so I will get the tire protection.

That's because he doesn't know how to drive those Alpinas. Haha. Tell your brother I said hello. I'm an old pal of his from the 7er boards.

Love it! I could tell by the look on his face when he says, "You're not going to believe it" that he did it again. When I signed for the X6, the dealer was telling me that they canceled the tire protection on an Alpina owner and gave him his money back. When I relayed the story, he got red in the face. I should shut up now, he's not going to like me playing in his world.

Hijack over.

It wasn't expensive, maybe $1200 if I remember correctly. I lease so I wouldn't do the Dinan upgrade. For me it was a no brainer, extra hp from the factory, I'll take it. I surprise the hell out of those pesky SL owners.

You should consider performance center delivery. It was a blast. Although the ride home would be a bit longer for you than it was for me.

Haha.

I remember him telling me about you -- and the fact that you bought an X6 50i -- when I was contemplating getting one, too. I was sort of sad to leave the world of 7ers at first, but I am really glad about my decision now.

He tried so hard to talk me out of getting the X6. He hated it. When he needs the cargo space or the weather is bad he borrows it. We had to go somewhere together recently and he asked if I wanted him to drive, I said...UHHH NO! He then said, I can believe I'm saying this, but this thing is a blast to drive.

I couldn't be happier with the X6. The best of both worlds. I always wanted a 6er and figured I'd wait until it got xdrive. Now I'm not so sure. I may have to make the jump to the X6 ///M next time out.

Providence - Sorry, don't mean to keep hijacking your thread. We're just making your wait more agonizing by talking about what a great choice you made. The X6 is incredibly agile for such a large heavy vehicle.

Yeah, I know he thought I'd lost my mind, too. Funny stuff.

I've had a variety of BMWs in my day. My favorite was probably the 6er Coupe, but as you insinuated, the lack of AWD was always an issue. I put snow tires on my 6ers and they did okay, but I never felt extremely confident in the snow. I'm in Central Ohio and put a lot of miles on my vehicle, going back and forth between three offices, so the ability to handle winter is key. And in that regard, the X6 has been amazing. Initially when I bought it, I intended it to be a supplement to a sedan, but I have loved driving the X6 so much that I've ended up just driving it year-round.

The rumor I'm hearing is that the new 6er w/ AWD will be available late spring or early summer in 2012. My lease will be up just before that, so I will certainly be considering all options.

You can check the status online or by phone. Usually it takes a few days to a week for the total process from when production starts, body shop, paint shop, to complete. Then released to carrier. Do you know how to track it? If not, I'll find the phone number and web address and post.

Copied from another forum:

1-800-831-1117

And if you don't want to talk to the operator (she never understands what I'm saying):
Dial number
When operator starts talking, press 2
When operator starts talking, enter production number
When operator starts talking, press 1
Listen for reply

You can also track it on BMWUSA -

Thanks. My CA sent me an email to let me know that production had begun. The website lags behind and still lists it as "on order". The wait is killing me.
