X1 vs. X3
Has anyone driven a new X3 and a X1? I'm curious how they compare against one another.

I think the Tiguan is the logical competitor, slightly cheaper, but not by much when you option it well. The Q3 is the obvious competitor, but that won't be out for a few years.
It surprises me how these forums focus on "the same class" when discussing car comparisons. I've never gotten hung up on that when I'm car shopping. When I bought my last car, I considered an Audi A3, Audi A4, and the BMW X3. Same class? Not really, but that's what I considered. -James Seattle, WA 2006 X3 3.0i (manual, m-sport, premium) |

X1 (E84) is an E series so it's based on the current E90 platform
BMW try to extend the life of E90 platform in X1 form for few years when the current E90 extincts in 12 months.. so X1 has all yesterday techonologies whilst the new X3 is an F series.... it has all the latest technology such as electric steering wheel, 7 speed transmission... X3 is based on the new 3 series platform (I was told ) I drove them both and X3 is a better built car.... but I would not touch the new X3 for another 12 months till BMW fix all the bugs.... BMW is very good at having bugs & flaws in the new models

Driven both (Actually drove the X1 in BMW Welt in Munich...)
They are not comparable... A non-technical observation: X1 will shock you in terms of interior space... it is too small and I would compare it with crossovers... before seeing it, I had a different impression... The driving though is all right. But I wouldn't buy it if I wanted: A) good interior space B) family concerns- with kids... I don't know the pricing in NA yet on the X1 but I would assume it is lower than X3. In general X3 is better but if you are looking for a lower price range...then X1 could be the alternative |

In Canada X1 28i starts at $38.5k while X3 28i starts at $41.9k. Difference of $3400.. Having checked out both cars in the showroom recently, X1 is much lower to the ground than X3, but still higher (not by much) than sedans and wagons. They are not in different class... I would say they are different cars. Just like X5 is different from X6.
I also sat in X3 recently, and the car is surprisingly roomy inside, and overall feel of the cabin is spacious.

I am leaning toward the X-3 for reasons of new platform, more kid/dog room and higher driving ht. for Mom. I know that the X-1 will probably drive more like a BMW CAR, but I am at a point in my life where one car needs to do it all and the X-3 does look much better than before. I will wait for the bugs to get worked out. But it is hard to wait...
The consolation is enjoying a bit more life from my older M3 sedan. |

I do like that twin-turbo engine and the M-sport offering for the X-3

X1 is in a different class than X3. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Before I bought my 11X3, I tested the 11X1. It is really a personal choice if you want either car. The X1 is fuel efficient than X3. The X3 is a bigger car. X1 is a great car, nice drive, the power is there when you need it, turns are nice. That said I still opt for X3 just bec. of size and I like the BMW I6 engines.
