Confessions of a driver lost...

Bless me 'Festers for I have sinned. It has been 10 years since my last BMW. During that time I have allowed my twisted and misguided desires and supposed needs to draw me astray and I confess that I have been unfaithful to your brand. Since parting with my first true automotive love - a manual Jet Black 1999 BMW 323i sport - I have sampled the fruit of another. Well, since we're being honest - others.

After the E46 I committed the ultimate indiscretion - I not only purchased a car right off the showroom floor but it was an Audi. A Quattro. An automatic no less. But hey, it was a beauty, fully-loaded and dressed in Denim Blue. I told myself that at least I was being loyal to the Germanic origin of automotive excellence. You were gracious to me then, allowing me several years of slightly better than average and shame-free motoring.

Unfortunately I didn't stop there. I let my heart stray again buy this time to sample the pleasures of the East. A slippery, low-slung,addictively high revving, Velocity Red Mazda RX-8. Not cylinders this time but rotors. I was feeling freaky! Heads turned wherever I drove and for a while I was the most popular guy in the office parking lot. And oh the joy I experienced while flogging that 9k RPM redline was truly perverse. Unfortunately you were not as forgiving this time around. Sure, all repairs were covered under Mazda warranty, but you seemed to find pleasure in smiting me with two defective clutches, two whining differentials, and an entirely blown engine. And if that weren't enough, you forced me endure a countless multitude of hours in the purgatory that is the Mazda service department, replete with cigarette-smoking lot lizards and stale donuts. While I still had to hire an attorney to compel Mazda to buy me out from under the Red Temptress, I heeded your admonishment and found another German car.

You had my attention if only for a moment and off to Volkswagen I went. I thought this is what you wanted! Your sense of humor came out when you talked me into the GLI version making me think that I was going to drive a sporty car. The usually reliable but mostly unrewarding driving "experience" of that VW Jetta was serviceable I suppose, but another automatic? Really?! Why?

After much quiet reflection, soul-searching, penance and even some Zig Ziglar audio books, I heard you calling me back to Bavaria. "Follow your heart and get another BMW", you said. "Don't be a jerk and jam your sons into the back of a coupe", you said. "Listen to your wife - buy private pre-owned and let someone else eat the depreciation", you said. And I listened this time buying a 2009 Space Gray BMW 335i . And while it shouldn't be a surprise to you since you're omnipresent and everything, you should know that I allowed myself some indulgences on sport and premium packages, navigation and comfort access too. And I am absolutely prepared for your consternation for my buying a car that my wife is unable to drive - a six-speed manual transmission. What can I say about that one? "The devil made me do it?"

Hey, the way I see it, we both got what we wanted in the end, right? I finally found a car with soul and you saved mine. Let's call it even!

335i coupe + sport package + 6MT - AWD =

Welcome back.

PS: While I love having the "purist" features like the sport package, 6MT and not having AWD, I most certainly love the convenience features such as iDrive, heated seats, and PDC.

Glad to hear you've come to your senses. Welcome back & you're welcome.

Beside the AWD debate, I made the blunder of marrying a woman who can operate a manual. And the most unfortunate mistake of having taught my three daughters to likewise drive a 6MT. The horror, the horror....

Hello, Steve.

But you'll leave us again - soon - won't you, Steve. 5 cars in a decade means you can't commit, and will easily be led astray by the next shiny new thing.

Goodbye, Steve.

And this is a mistake because??? I can drive a MT... and I am the one who taught all 3 of our kids to drive one too!!! Two boys and one girl. The girl caught on much faster than either of the boys by the way.

Yea you can't do ED or have your car exactly how you want it configured, but CPOs are such good value, especially when you get one only a couple of years old.

Welcome back to the greener side of the fence! Space gray is handsome. How do you like the 300-300-throw-you-back-in-your-seat combo?

My bad to leave out the sarcasm (due to the OP position of leaving his wife out of the MT mix). There is nothing that I meant to mean it's mistake at all. The importance can not be over-stressed, that everyone should learn how to drive a manual & I'm most proud that all my daughters were taught well to operate the manual transmission on all three of our vehicles. The OP may need to teach his wife how to operate his car or regret someday that she can't operate a clutch.

In the workplace, I was frequently upset that co-workers (male or female) that I relied on were unable to drive certain rigs in the motor pool. No one should hampered by the type of operating transmission on the car they could possibly need to drive.

Excellent read, thanks!

Welcome back and don't be surprised if your wife suddenly gets interested in learning to drive MT.

Now THAT'S some funny stuff right there! That is a terrible record though, right? I've been married for 15 years and from before we were engaged I told her that I would never cheat on her but my cars were fair game ;-)

Thanks! I've never been one who needed status. I drove my first BMW over 20 years ago and that ruined me for all other cars. Heaven forbid I ever drive a Porsche, Ferrari, etc.

Why apologize for doing the right thing? I don't get it...unless this is some anti-female screed. My wife and daughter both prefer stick. My son doesn't see the point. He likes auto. (He's very pragmatic.) I say, whatever floats their boat is okay with me.

Alas, mea culpa, I was making an apparently very bad attempt at a joke, due to the 'devilish position' of the OP. I have all the respect in the world for the women & girls of the world that are driving the MT, learning to drive one or wishing someday to drive a manual.

Sorry StevearnoldschwarzeneggerGiant, you chose to have an affair with an Audi, leaving in the lurch your faithful 323i Sport .

Mein Auto: assorted awesomeness
This is one of my favorite thread-openings.

I, too, have been tempted by Audis, VWs and, especially, an RX-8, particularly given prices on the used market, but I kept seeing others falling to the temptation and their initial bliss quickly turning to despair.

He just like the rest of us bought the Bmw for the badge.

180 degrees, I'm afraid. Been married for 30 years, first and last wife. Just sold our 1996 Dodge Diesel 4X4 One Ton Dually (bought new) last October. Rather than flit from car to car, we tend to buy the exact car we want for our current needs and then drive it into the ground.

To preempt the next question: My response is - If I'd shot her when I first wanted to, I'd be out of prison by now.
