Sunroof stuck open on 1998 528I

Hi all;
I have researched other threads on this site but nothing has reallycompletly solved my problem. The sunroof on my car is stuck in the open (vent) position. I checked the fuses and they seem to be okay and I don't think that's theproblem anyway as I can hear the motor clicking when I have worked the switch. Owners manual mentioned if there was a power interuption to hold the button down for several seconds. I have not had a power interrupt but tried this anyway and nothing happened (except clicking in the motor). Owners manual also said to remove head console light trim and access and remove a vinyl plug where you can use an allan key to manually crank the sunroof. Did that and could see nothing but metal roof under the acces plug. No set screw!
Finally all the repair instructions I have read online mention everything from broken/debris in track or failed cassette and replacement but nothing much on motor replacement.
Also the insructions I have come across always mention to close the sun roof before disaasembling which is difficult to do as the sunroof is stuck open!
If you could direct me to a site or another thread that I may have missed I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Did you try pushing UP on the glass while jogging the button?
Sometimes this helps to get the locking pins moved out of its end travel.

you know this happen'd to me like a week ago...was freaked out. I just played with the switch, it was cold and I'm sure was just cranky for sitting all winter closed.... when I did get it to free, I lubed everything good, and now works real smooth.

THe only option available is to remove the glass out of the car, and see what's keeping the rails from retracting. IT could be that one side of the rain gutter tray has disconnected itself and is jamming up the tilt mechanism.

Might be a good time to send your car into to a shop, b/c it's pretty easy to break these parts once the glass is removed.

I've never had this problem so I haven't done extensive research (as I would have had I had this problem) ... and I see you researched but you didn't say which threads you looked at so I will just provide you the 'standard' response to sunroof/moonroof stuck open problems:

- How to repair & reset the sunroof (1) (2) (3) & how to fix sun roof rattles (1) & how to test & fix moonroof leaks (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) causing water on the front passenger carpet & how to remove the roof headliner (1)

Thanks for the links Blue.
Some of them I did come across but none were able to solve the problem. It looks like I need to access the manual set screw via the motor through the sunroof switch/garage door opener panel. I am scred to break something taking the cover off as I can't seem to pry it off. Once I get in there at least I should be able to determine whats up with powere to the motor and manually crank the sunroof closed. Because the sunroof (sr) is in the tilt up position I can't visually inspect the track for breaks/blocks or access any of the screws to remove the sunroof. It all starts with actually being able to open/close the sunroof.

Thanks for all your help. I did manage to get the switch/motor cover panel off prior to the above post. (just need to remember to work slow and easy with this stuff). Got access to the motor allan key screw to manually shutt the roof. Tried the switch again and it opened the slider to full and then continued to cycle through without stopping to open the vent and there it froze again. switch would not close it so I manually ratchetted it closed again. Tried again and same scenario. Went to the dealer and asked the young pup at the service desk whether it was the switch itself or if there is a part in the motor that doesn't recognize position of the sunroof and stop it in th open cycle. He told me that it may need a computer reset but couldn't tell me if it was motor or switch related, just a computer reset.
Gee, I wonder how much one of those costs?

Thanks again for all the help.

Yes CN I saw it but I don't think it applies as nothing "snapped". The track and mechanism work fine it 's just the motor won't close it when it does a non stop open cycle to th event position. When manually closing it everything runs smooth.

So, are you thinking about a motor transplant?

Used motor on ebay is about $40-50.

Another option: remove your sunroof motor and perform surgery on it.

It doesn't necessarily sound like the motor to me, since it actually retracts the roof, if I'm reading his post correctly. It might just be a switch/sensor that governs the motor.
