Replaced SunRoof seal today

Could not bear the highway wind noise from sunroof anymore, took the car to the dealer today, and they replaced the seal. Now it's much better!!

Had a 2010 535xi Wagon as loaner car ..the car feels so heavy and N54 is still too small for such a big car. BMW should put V8 in this one.

Glad to have my V8 back!!

Glad to hear they were able to fix your problem. It took my dealer 3 tries over a year to get it right. The wind noise is gone, but beware of the "draft" you'll get in cold weather while taking a turn. I can live with that but the wind noise was unbearable.

I've only had my e60 a few months but in the cold I noticed a draft coming from the passenger side turning right at lower speeds. How/where's this coming from?! I also have a fair amount of wind noise with the sunroof shade open and was wondering about replacing the seal. Is it a DIY job (I'm out of warranty) - thanks.

You can purchase the seal for $30-$50 and do it yourself. Search here or 5series.net for the DIY. After you replace the seal press the open button for about 20sec to initiate the calibration and it will open/close to reset the range of motion and the force required to close.

Out of warranty the dealer will want ~$280.

Wow - a 2010 wagon as a loaner - they can't give these away, but use them as loaners?

I agree with the weight comment - which is why I installed the Dinan S2 software - gobs of HP and Touque to battle the extra weight... who needs a V8?

Wind Noise from Sun Roof

I have just joined Bimmerfest. Thanks for letting us know that replacing the sun roof seal solved the wind noise problem. I have a 2008 535i (still under warranty) and have had this annoying problem for some time now. At first I thought it was just a design problem but still couldn't believe that BMW would have such a serious design flaw. One of the sales reps at the dealer said it was probably the A pillar (??). The problem has become worse now (even had a drip or two of water come in while going through a brushless car wash) and I wanted to deal with it before the warranty runs out. I did some research on google and found many useful postings on Bimmerfest regarding the problem. From what I've read it looks as if it's the seal and I will take this up with the Service Advisor when I bring the car in for scheduled service tomorrow. I also found that someone had posted a Service Bulletin (SI B54 04 09 covering all E60/61 up to 11/2008) on the problem and this will help my case. Thanks to all for helping me come up with a solution. Will keep you posted on results.

Finally had the seal replaced under warranty by the dealer and thankfully it's much quieter now.

The extra weight of the V8 engine and the immense power it delivers causes a massive torsion deflection of the dash and side pillars, which translates to gapping of the sunroof seal as you turn; gapping relative to speed. This is the reason for the cold air... the V8 engine.

Of course, I am just kidding...

I installed the new seal. It's about a 10 or 15 minute job. I also held the open button for the reprogramming sequence.

Now, after going through the reprogramming sequence, the vent opens but not the sunroof. I've done it three times. Any ideas?

When you pressed the button to start the sequence, did you hold the button in while the roof opened/closed by itself to complete the sequence?
