Just bought an '01 BMW 325i... No reverse.

It's a black on tan 2001 325i sedan, auto transmission. I just bought it yesterday (03/29), it's my first Bimmer, I LOVE IT even with the issues it has... and it has ALOT of issues (no power steering (pump?), leaking radiator, leaking oil, no reverse) but the engine runs great and I only paid $1,000 for it off Craigslist, the owner said he was selling it because of the transmission. $1,000 seems really low for the car even with the problems, but I hope I got a good deal, the transmission issue makes me nervous. The inside and outside is in really good shape, no dents and only a little rust over the passenger rear wheelwell. It has 179,000 miles. It shifts great in forward gears, but no reverse engagement. Can this be fixed without a rebuild??? I read something about it being a Valve Body? My moms Saturn needed one of those last year and it was only $400 bucks @ indi transmission shop, so I hope that's all it needs. I searched the site and found mostly people with 323i's and 330i's with this problem... Is this a common problem for the 2001+ 325i's too? I'll post pics in the morning. Thanks guys.

You bought a car with no reverse? You're brave. Do what smolck did, a swap for a manual.

$1000 for a car full of expensive-to-fix problems? wow. Please keep us posted b/c i would like to know how much ahead you come out of this seemingly good deal.

An '01 325i in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition with that many miles would be about $8k, but with body rust and other wear is probably about $6k, so if you can get it all fixed for under $5k you'll come out ahead.

Good luck and keep us informed on your progress.

Your build date indicates you have a ZF transmission. The failure of the reverse drum is the most common cause of no reverse in these units.

Worst comes to worst, you can always part it out and get your money back, so I think you got a good deal.
From what I've read switching to manual is a pain, but could be done. Buying a new (used) auto transmition should be much simpler. You'll need to do a number of other things as well though - CABs, cooling system, PCV, Vanos maybe ...

All filters and liquids, belts, spark plugs.

Have you been able to locate where the oil leak is coming from? Hopefully the engine was not overheated (due to old and obviously broken cooling system)??

I would suggest you take it to a trustworthy mechanic who can give you a complete list of what it needs. The oil leek and coolant leak are both potentially terminal problems that could lead to the death of your motor. The trans could be fixable, but sometimes they just need to be replaced.
It sounds like you bought a car with lots of problems that was poorly maintained which spells trouble in high mileage bimmers. Try to get a complete list of what it really needs before you get in too deep.
Good luck...

At $1000 I'd put a manual in there. I paid $1200 for my swap. Then it'll last you a LONG time.

Then the car will have the proper transmission

I don't really want to swap the transmission out for a manual. I drive in alot of heavy traffic during the week to and from class, that would suck if I had a stick. I just want to know what this means for my car not to have reverse??? Is it a good chance that I'll have to replace/rebuild the trans? Or could this be something that I might be able to get away with just a fluid drain-and-fill and a new part? I love this car, I'd hate selling it if the transmission is no good.

For smolck the Tranny God, it's a mere $1200. For the rest of us mere mortals, it would be an arm and a leg, literally. Here's how it plays out. We'll try to do it ourselves first. In the process we get pinned underneath the detached tranny - on one side of our body, if we're lucky. Then since we are most likely to be working alone by ourselves because we are fiercely independent true men, our arm and leg on the pinned down side will turn blue until our significant other gets home. By then it would be too late and those bluish limbs will have to be amputated.

Umm, you can't back up? IMO, I guess no harms in the long run because you could keep on driving forward and be careful not to get yourself in a spot where you have to do some backing up, like getting into a U-turn-not-able dead-end.

It's time to replace that transmission, either with another slushy or the smarter choice a manual box, which will not give you this problem again. No reverse usually means the end of the line for these autos.

Thanks, that's all I wanted to know. If it is salvageable or not. It'll be back up for sale tomorrow then.

Don't be a smart ass. My question was clear as day.
